What’s your favourite weed?

Gardening involves weeding. Even creating a ‘wildflower garden’ still involves a certain amount of weeding if you don’t want the more thuggish plants to take over. I try to avoid it as much as possible by filling the flower beds with plants I do want and adding lots of mulch so there’s little bare soil available for weeds to get started. In the vegetable garden though it’s pretty much unavoidable that there will be some bare earth while young seedlings just get going. As someone put it, weeding gives you a God-like ability to decide who will live and who will die. And a weed is just a plant in an undesirable place - grass in the flowerbeds for example. I confess I feel bad as I pull out wild flowers from the vegetable patch. Often I let them grow for a while until I really need the space for something edible. My favourite weed has to be Speedwell. It certainly lives up to its name, getting going early in spring and growing fast. It also seeds all over the place and would certainly take over everywhere if allowed. But I do love its cheery blue flowers - and as an added bonus it’s one of the easiest plants to pull up! So I can let it have its time in the sun, admire the flowers, then weed it out and compost it, knowing that there will still be plenty of seeds there ready to repeat the process! That sure is a beautiful flower, I would want to grow it..rather than weed it..LOL. Depending upon the size of petals of course. Tridax is common out here...no I do not like it ..but it does come up without invitation. It does not have vibrant color...dull ..though on closer examination, it is beautiful too... For now, gardening is off my list. We have black fungus epidemic running concurrently with COVID because of steroids.. so gardening is definitely off list. I like growing mint. And what we call money plant...and best... marjoram plant..it has great smell, and i am fine if it grows as weed. LOL

They are pretty flowers, but they are over very quickly and after that there isn't much to enjoy, just a mat of tangled stems. But it does cover the ground! I have lots of mint too, and oregano (which I think is basically the same as marjoram). Both do well and the bees love the oregano flowers too.

The Covid and black fungus situation is truly terrible. I hope you stay safe. And of course I hope we (humans) can overcome this soon.

Those little flowers are pretty, my favorite weeds are the wild violets. I never pull them up and they have invaded some large areas of my garden.

I have quite a few patches of those too! Luckily they usually stay in the grassy areas so I don't need to move them : )

Speedwell is one of my favourites, too. The name, apparently, comes from an old practice of wearing one in your buttonhole for luck if you are on a journey. I don't know why this particular plant was chosen as a lucky charm but one of the old names for it was 'Eye of the Child Jesus'. Perhaps it was thought that He'd see you safe, if anyone would!

The weeds that you have here are pretty little things. My favorite weed are the tiny little violets that appear in the grass here and there. I find them so small and pretty.

If it flowers I don't think of them as weeds, but I do pull up the grasses that manage to make it
