Motown May rolls on with the third part of this month-long salute to the great R&B music from Detroit. This time around, it’s the great Marvin Gaye. Here’s another one of his songs that you may (or may not) remember.
#9: Pride and Joy
Earlier in the countdown, when I was looking at the various acts on the Motown family of labels, I used Martha and the Vandellas. At this point of their career they were also doing background vocals for other Motown acts. That’s them singing backup on this great tune.
And here’s some Picky Wedia trivia for you: when the Beatles landed in America the first time, they requested this song when they appeared on the radio with Murray the K.
Pride and Joy
Written by Norman Whitfield, Marvin Gaye, and William “Mickey” Stevenson
From That Stubborn Kind of Fellow, 1963
