I have never encouraged begging specially when youngsters do it I will ask them to do some work in the garden for example specially when I see them looking healthy and when that offer is made they vanish. There are many able bodied prefer to beg than work. Having said that in the area where I live there are not many beggars Do you give alms to beggars? Image credit:

I discourage begging. I never offer anything to a beggar. If you mistakenly offer them any food item, they ask for money. When I stop my car at red light, beggars keep approaching the car (even the small kids). I keep my window panes locked and ignore them completely.

You give to one and not to other - that seems unfair and extremely confusing...

Unless they are disabled giving alms is wrong

It depends. When I have given to somebody, I give food not money.

@sallypup Everyone can use food money they can do other things, most do want to die what I learned. Sad but true and its not all mental but they feel so disgraced that they can never rebound. Sure there is mental cases but the ones that are not are just done because they saw societies true colors and I agree its pitiful and society is at fault not them because they were trying and you did that to them. Not you personally but hope you know what I mean.

@crossbones27 Years ago I worked with the elderly in their homes. When the client was in the hospital I had no work and no income. I still had a family to feed. One time I ended up with zero food and zero income. I went to a food bank but I went there, telling the folks that I would volunteer before I took food. I helped bag and sort. I did not get food like I was used to but it kept my daughter going. My family was the "hippie" in the community so the odd stuff, the brown rice, the lentils, the dried fruit that nobody wanted went to us and that helped cause we got more nutrition that way. I know about being humble. I've almost been in the homeless folk's shoes. I don't know if I felt disgraced when I needed help. I just needed to find a way to keep going and I worked my way out.

I do not like it. I tried one time and felt so ashamed I will never do it again. I think I would rather die. Screw people who make people beg anyway. Not a world I want to live in. You all so proud that you do that to people and I get their is scammers but that is the most sickening thing ever.

It depends on what I am seeing. Sometimes it is not safe to do so around here.

It may not be easy to know who is genuinely in need.

No beggars here, but you can find them in large cities. I stay away from them, but hubs buys some of them meals.

If a beggar really looks hungry I will give him some money or buy him something to eat.

I dont give money to anyone. If they are hungry I will offer to feed them but I do the cooking or the buying. They always turn that offer down even.

If one can make them independent that would be of great help
