Cannot access or recover my google account

I got an email the other day from Google. I know it's from them as I checked the sender's email. It said that they are aware that someone knows the password to my linked Google account and that they've taken steps to protect it. I have to sign into the account and create a new password to secure the account.
I went to sign in to my Google account and put in my email and password. Doing that I got this message: Google couldn’t verify this account belongs to you. Try again later or use Account Recovery for help.
There was a button underneath called "Recover Account" so I clicked on that. Entered my gmail email. Then it asked me to enter the last password I remember using with this Google Account. I did that. Clicked next and got another message: You’re trying to sign in on a device Google doesn’t recognize, and we don’t have enough information to verify that it’s you. For your protection, you can’t sign in here right now. Try again later or sign in from a different device.
I tried doing all the steps again, except instead of entering the last password I remember using I clicked on "try another way." It asked me a security question and I gave them the answer. This gave me the following message: Google couldn’t verify this account belongs to you.
I've tried all this today as well and same results. How the heck can I get into my account? I am assuming this is in reference to my gmail account and not another Google account unrelated to gmail.

If you did not use this email for long, you might have forgotten the password and you might be logging from a new / different device. You could either recover it through a recovery mail or phone number (if you have already given). Otherwise, go for a new account.

@lovebuglena It seems to me that your email ID was not important to you, as you have not been using it for a long time. I doubt if you missed any important mail, which landed in that email ID?
It would be better to open a new email account. There are few websites, wherein you could safely store your password and that becomes handy in case you forget the password. You could search for such sites through any search engine.

The password I enter does not give me a message that the password is incorrect. I am unable to recover it it seems.

@dpk262006 I already have another gmail, which I use. No need to create another one. This one I forgot I even had till I got that email that someone tried to log in with my password.

I forgot I even have this gmail.com. I don't remember why I even created it. I just wanted to see what emails I have in there. And maybe even close the account.

@lovebuglena I gave the number first. But you give them the number, they will send you a code and you give them the code.

@popciclecold I did not do that originally I don't think because they emailed me. I wonder if they would have texted me as well if they had my number on file.

I do not remember giving them my phone number. Would they have sent me an alert to my phone if I had given them my phone number?

Usually they ask for your telephone number and send you a text. Do they have your current cell number?

@lovebuglena Hmm, I guess you are going to have to create a new account.

@snowy22315 I don't really need a new account as I have a gmail account already. I just wanted to log into this one and see what emails I have in there.

I doubt you can get help. I posted something I think it was in the blogger community and never got one response.
