When we were kids we used to wear hand me downs in that the older siblings would hand over their clothes if they did not fit them but the younger siblings could wear them. That is history now atleast in my circle. The other issue is even maids will not wear them as they do not wear the type of clothes that we would hand them over. This is a real problem. How is the situation where you live?

it is widespread case when we are little because a large number of people are in poverty. When the new clothes cost much to a family, they used to accept sibling's second-hand clothes.however, nowadays the situation is gone, nobody have to wear a second-hand clothes, even most ordinary can afford new clothes which are a piece of cake

@jefferson126 @allknowing That is what I say you would need most of these charities if you made sure everyone that wanted could earn a living wage. I think that is why they do it here. So people can still get rich off of poor people.

Depends on the person and their situation. My husband is okay with buying most clothes from Good Will or any thrift store. He doesn't mind buying used, if it means he saves some money, and he rarely gets rid of clothes. He didn't grow up in poverity (and neither did I) but he was raised to live within his means. Which means he won't spend money where it's not needed. However, there are those in our country who will buy new as often as possible while others are in-between. Like my husband I make my clothes last, but unlike my husband my clothes come from Wal-mart.

@allknowing They get tossed or recycled. By then they are not much more than random string.

I buy clothes from Goodwill every now and then when real poor. Most I would not wear but some of the stuff is not bad at all. They even have sales on second hand clothes I always get a kick out of that. Goodwill here is actually the cheapest, Salvation Army does it too but they are pretty expensive compare to Goodwill. I always think might as well buy brand new for those prices. Clothing is more well kept or nicer at Salvation Army and it does help them stay funded so they can help actual poor people.

Since my elder sisters are all girls, hand me down is very common to us and later we give them to our younger cousins

Here in my country we usually donate, sell or give away our second hand clothes to people who need it most. When I was little we do not usually buy expensive clothes but rather have those second hand clothes next to our sister or brother clothes that doea not fit with then already, and despite the crisis and poverty in our country we usually donate it rather than putting it in the trash. As long as the clothes are still good to be use.

Now, I gave some to our neighbor.. There are people who are not choosy over things and will gladly accept anything good from others... stay safe!

I used to wear the clothes of my elder brother when I was a child . Now my kids are twins so they both have the same size. My wife hands over the clothes which get short to my brother's kids or her sister's kids these days.

I had that also.. I use to have handed over clothes from my sister and that is fine with me.. as of now, I choose my own clothes and if it does not fit me, I hand it over to my niece, if they don't like it, I will keep it and give it to the people who are in needs, Like the victims of the typhoon and the likes
