Is it problem with my math or logic?

Supreme Court of India wants 400000 INR approx. 5333 USD, to be given to the families of each dead person. And the government says it will have to compromise on other schemes to do so SO IT CANNOT. Are there rigid boundaries on schemes etc.? Then from where did the government squeeze out 20000 crores for Central vista project i.e., 26666666666.667 USD? The last time I had mentioned many statues ..I forgot Adi Shankaracharya Statue. Yeah..that is another of those 1000 plus statues that the country has. Most are controversial. Which means somebody is gonna damage them sometime, leading to tension at some point of time. Agreed there is money to be saved on office rent. But such futile expense is it really worth it at this hour? And will there be really any savings on office rent at all? I think not. Any building requires maintenance. Any facilities in it require maintenance. I KNOW. And that eats away hefty sum. The smaller the building, the lesser the expense. Trust me... Moreover, Indians... you may have watched those Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha (house of lords and house of commons) proceedings. There are many members who stand up to criticize, and have no fresh input. They are, in effect, repeating what a person before them said, whether or not from the same party. That relay across televisions costs us decent sum which can be saved. Technological advances help us to cut costs. If the subject is finance, why do we need a person from sports or health or cultural promotion to be sitting there? As it is, attendance is dismal. There is pomp and show - all for nothing. Can't we use Zoom? In any event, what about the priorities? Is a classy building for Parliamentarians more important than helping the poor regain their lives? We spend less than Pakistan on our healthcare system. That should at least become a motivating factor. This morning I was reading an article that there is a State in this country where people spend ... 99.90 out of pocket for healthcare. Seriously? Compare that with UK ..80 pecent is spent by the government. If that is not wrong priority what is? India needs to seriously review its voting rights... There should be test on abilities to understand issues and sense of right and wrong for that right to vote. Buying votes is making it easier for unscrupulous and dominating folks for giving in inches and taking in yards.
The Logical Indian fact checks the claims that the cost of the Central Vista Project is Rs 971 crores.

I need to understand how they decided so much will be spent on buildings that will be useful for less than 3000 people.

@vandana7 They built statues in the name of leaders but leaders never wanted it this way. They sacrificed their lives, families everything. What they wanted was to see a flourished nation. The most important thing is health and education this are the fields where government should pay attention to

@CuriousGab I am left to wonder they speak of Ram Rajya. Ram Rajya would not have unhappiness ...diseases. They actually insult Ram when they do such administration and insult the Hindu in me. If in Ram Rajya there can be Disha case, then Ram is not around.

1/3rd of that money would help so many poor, so many could continue their education, there would less of human trafficking. Do they really care? You all had Trump. We have this guy Modi oblivious to the plight, just lip service.

@MeshSha Research and development, healthcare, education, good law enforcement and justice departments, better fiscal management by having controls on banking, tax collections, etc., and better defense.

@MeshSha Nope. Democracy in present format is made useless in our country. No government in this country will work towards those objectives because we are so divided - we need complete change in the system.

I am not a fan of government or politician bashing, so will take a tangential line on this post. My salary was less than the proposed amount. Though not clear what this compensation is for. And Zoom is stupid. I am not for a second getting starry-eyed on oh-this-tech. And then my main tiff here. You have pasted the link of a "fact check" here though you don't talk about it. I have an inherent distaste for all kind of fact checks but I did open this link and the underlying ones. None of those do any justice to supposed fact checking. Some random newspaper saying toilet papers cost 2000/- per rim in India doesn't make it a fact. In some of the comments you have mentioned Ram Rajya. I think we are having that already, as the standard of "news" matches just as much. Wasn't Sita exiled because of a very similar "fact check"? She did spend time with Ravan after all!

@vandana7 "which is 2000 crores if that is the figure that has gone to the Supreme Court." -- none of the links in there specify this was the amount. Just a fleeting reference, that too in headline. No substance. I agree in principle with all your demands. Worth note, though, nobody is held at gunpoint to do their job. If "wanted to serve the nation" is the parameter, then all the doctors, soldiers, the whole army itself, police, bankers and everyone in the public service should be stripped of their salaries and whatever perks they get.

I think you added an extra 6 in that USD number, but I'm not totally sure. It should be 2 billions and something, not 26. Still a lot anyway. A vaccine against corruption should be invented as well. What if that very useful building costs less than 2 billions but they're paying that much to do someone a favor? That happens quite often in Italy. I lost hope in any government. The saddest thing is that governments are supposed to represent citizens and therefore are made of citizens, meaning the average citizen is likely to act in the same selfish manner if they had the chance.

It is pathetic the way we become powerless in democracy once we cast our votes.

They are spending the money where it is not needed but they do not move a finger to build more hospitals and places where to cure sick people. There is a lot that is ore urgent than building statues.

Long ago when I came up with a post about statues ..plenty of people attacked me. I always felt taxpayer's monies should not be used for such purposes. COVID and people's plight only makes me sure that I was right about it.

@vandana7 I am with you on the statues. Taxpayers should have their word to say when money is spent for things that are not useful for the community.
