My Poppy Passed Out In The Backyard....

Perth, Australia

For those of you who remember, my Poppy (my grandfather, not my dad) had been in hospital for quite some time recently (roughly 20 days). It was a huge roller-coaster of not knowing what was going on, to thinking it was the end, to him being better again. Though, sadly the dementia will never get better but whatever was going on with him at the time got better. He went from eating pretty much nothing to now eating like a pig. He is loving his hot chips lately! Anyway, on Thursday, Nanny rang about 1pm to tell us the ambulance was there taking Poppy away as he had fainted in the backyard. My poor Nan tried to lift him but obviously she couldn't. She went and got a neighbour but as he was in his 70's or maybe 80's (unsure) he too couldn't lift him so the ambulance was called. My Nan waited for about 7 hours before the doctors said my Pop could go back home again. So my dad picked them both up and dropped them home. Poor Poppy. I feel bad. He passes out quite a bit nowadays. The only good thing I can say is that my Poppy never recalls being at the hospital. I mean, it's sad he doesn't remember as it just happened but I mean it's good he doesn't remember all the confusion and sadness of not being home. Some people come in I think 2-3 days a week to help shower him. That's good she's finally accepted help at least. Other than that, he has been quite ok. Eating a lot. He has been extremely hungry since being out of the hospital. But he always seems to be craving hot chips like from KFC or Hungry Jack's (Burger King). I wonder why the chips though. Carbs? Don't know but glad he is eating!

Chips = carbs, fat and salt. Isn't that why many crave them when they have a hungover? It's something with the combination of fat and salt that makes them irresistible. Good that your grandmother has accepted some help. It must be weird though, I guess she has managed everything herself til now?

@VivaLaDani13 It's something about potatoes. Just talking about it makes me crave them too! Chips with sour cream and salsa. Maybe I should get some tomorrow. That sounds like quite a few of the older women I've known. Used to work from they were small, and then they've worked in some way all their life, so when they get old and need help it's rather confusing for them. Or they think it's just wrong and go on about "not wanting to be a nuisance" and "I'm not that old yet, I can manage!"

@Torunn Oh that sounds so good right now! It's 3:20am here right now. Sleeping is a little weird (again) so I'm hungry. Especially now after reading that. That is true. I do believe my Nan also doesn't want randoms in their house in case it confuses my Pop. But yes, it's mainly about my Nan being the person to look after him as she's always done.

@Torunn I did ask my dad the other day if it could be the carbs he is craving. I am just glad he is eating something. The last time I was at My Nan and Pop's house, he did very well eating his lunch which involved chips. I forget what the other food was though but I remember the chips. Yeah she has been taking a lot of things on ever since she was a child so she's very much used to it and I guess sort of stubborn when accepting help. But I am glad she has at least accepted this for now as regarding my Pop, she has done everything for him.

@VivaLaDani13 Maaybe he had a craving in the hospital and could not get what he wanted so when he got out he was able to have it. I have no idea why that he wants to eat. That was be hard that he has dementia? Is your Nan ok? How is your Poppy now?

@Hannihar He was able to have hot chips in the hospital as my Nan and / or dad would bring him some. The craving began sometime during his long stay at the hospital but maybe that's why it started, as they weren't being served as you said. Interesting! My Nanny is just stressed and almost always overwhelmed with worrying about him and the constant questions being asked over and over. She knows why but it's stressing her out. My Poppy is ok considering the circumstance. Thank you Hanni.

@Hannihar Thank you Hanni. My Poppy is back home. He is still craving and eating hot chips. Makes me smile every time I hear about it as I would rather he eat. And no worries at all if you missed what i said or misread it. Everything is alright here thank you kindly. My dad is just still putting up with his ex? Or whatever she is. She's a horrible woman. But he loves her for whatever stupid reason. Apart from that, all is ok thank you. You and Sophie have been in my thoughts.

@VivaLaDani13 Hospital food stinks so so glad he has something he can eat that he enjoys. I can imagine how she must feel. Is your Poppy back home or still in the hospital? I am sorry if you told us and I mistread something. I seem to do that at times. Sorry if I did. You are welcome Dani and take care and know you worry about your family and the animals. How are you and how are the animals and how is your Dad doing?

So sorry for that distressing news about your poppy. I guess he needs more attention from anyone who could help him whenever that happens again. But l am happy that his appetite is there which is a good indication.

I am so sorry, I hope that at least he did not hurt himself when he passed out. Chips are not the best food, but if he likes at least he eats some food. I am glad that your grandmother is accepting help now.

@LadyDuck He has hit his head a few times during all of these black outs but thankfully never serious enough. It's mostly him hurting his back and / or legs. Me too. She really needed it. Thank you Anna.

@Nakitakona Him eating like a pig is awesome. It's just the fainting part that is worrisome. But I am happy he is eating as he wasn't eating much before. He even kept on taking out his IV drip when he was in hospital. Was very distressing.

@Nakitakona I know it was awful. Apparently a lot of dementia patients take out / try to take out their drips. Unsure why. Possibly because they don't understand or recall while it's there.

Dementia can be so cruel, it sort of steals the person away from loved ones. I am glad he is eating. Hospital food is often just not very appealing to anyone.

@MarieCoyle You said it very well! Every now and again he enjoyed the hospital food but more times than not he would kinda just move it around the plate. But I am so glad he is eating a lot at home now.

@VivaLaDani13 It's sad when a loved one has Dementia, especially when they know they have it and ask you what they said or did. Plus you have to try to enjoy the moments of clarity, and then accept the other person they become during the spells of dementia I know it can be heartbreaking, and I am so sorry.

Has he been diagnosed with any chronic medical conditions? If he's passing out, it could be from abnormal sugar levels, or blood pressure that is too low. Or there could be a host of other issues. But, the good news is that he is eating. Usually that's a good sign when someone has a healthy appetite. I hope he ends up being alright and gains all his strength back.

@moffittjc I am pretty unsure to be honest. While he had his long stay at the hospital, there was talk about his Angina medication possibly causing this. I believe they took him off of that but I'm unsure. Also don't know if this is all something to do with the dementia. But yes, the eating is very joyous news. It makes us (me, dad, nan) all smile and sometimes laugh about this obsession he has with the hot chips. Thank you very kindly Jeff!

@CarolDM Thank you for that. And his appetite is so amazing. It's a little funny about his obsession with the hot chips. But I mean funny in a "So glad he is eating and what a funny craving lately" type of way.
