Here on Monday I’m ready to make your start of the work week worse. I’ve mentioned that these songs are more in order of my appreciation for the saxophone work (hence, the “hot sax” title) than whether I think song A is better than song B. So, for those thinking I’m implying this is a better song than “Turn the Page”….no. So here it is. Flame away.
#7: True - Spandau Ballet
Having said that, I do love this song.
If you just know this casually, you’re thinking, “Sax solo?” Most people just remember the “ah, ha-ha-HA-ha” that begins the song.
Oh, yeah, there’s a sax break in this song. A great sax break.
Spandau Ballet guitarist Gary Kemp, it seems, was madly in love with Clare Grogan, the lead singer of Altered Images. She gave him a copy of Lolita (no clue why: there’s only three years’ age difference
), so he borrowed the line about “that little girl and her seaside limbs” and turned it into one of the most iconic lines in the song: “take your seaside arms and write the next line.”
Thanks to lead vocalist Tony Hadley’s marvelous vocals, this is one of those enduring classics from the 80s.
