Trying to Reason With People in Hurricane Season

Tropical Storm Elsa is scheduled to get over or near Key West in the next 12-24 hours.
I’ve been watching the live cams from the Keys, and people are oblivious to that fact. Or, at least, they’re acting like they’re oblivious. Maybe it’s the “dang it, I’m on vacation, and I don’t care!” attitude that some seem to show. Or, more probably, the consumption of some of the adult beverages on Duval Street.
Now, do understand that I lived in Florida for most of my teenage years. I was also stationed along the coast (and on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean) throughout my Navy career. So hurricanes are “old hat” to me. Still, I always wonder about a few things.
For instance, why is there always a run on plywood when they issue a tropical storm/hurricane watch? What the heck did the people do with the plywood from the LAST hurricane? What, do they think plywood is a band-aid? Use once then throw away?
And what is up with the run on bottled water? Don’t any of these poor people have WATER FAUCETS in their homes? They can’t fill jugs, pitchers, and bottles themselves instead of paying $10 a case for someone else to do it?
One of the most enduring stories about Hurricane Camille is the “hurricane party” at an apartment complex in Pass Christian, Mississippi (which is now disputed as fact), and how that apartment complex was literally wiped off it foundation when the storm came ashore in 1969. Today we have people standing outside trying to get video of tornadoes.
I guess as long as there’s bad weather there’ll be bad reactions to it.

I have always wondered about those 2 things also. They are going to hate the cost of that plywood now also.
But I am one that will stand and watch a tornado

I will watch one….on live stream. If one is heading for me I’ll be underground, thank you.

@FourWalls If it heads for me I will run. But they are a really beautiful part of nature. Watched one a few miles off years ago. It was headed east, I was north of it.

We watch FL webcams too. Try the Southernmost Point webcam. The waves are really splashing over the marker today with the high winds. People love bottled water (why? I don't know); and that's one of the reasons why we have such a problem with plastic pollution. Did you watch the cams over the 4th weekend? Duval Street was packed. Have a good day.

I pretty much watch live things: baseball and webcams.
If I weren’t so impulsive I could’ve warned you I would be taking that sunset cruise in Key West last year and you could’ve watched me!

I've been lucky I have lived in Daytona Beach now for four years and I have seen heavy downpours and wild winds but I have never met a hurricane and I would like to keep it that way, Thanks for the song,

David hit there in 1979. We’ll, technically, it was just off the coast as it came up Florida. I was in Jacksonville when that hit.

This area will NEVER not take a hurricane seriously again. We very rarely get them. The year before Sandy we had Hurricane Irene. It was pretty much a non-event. When Sandy was approaching it didn't meet the technical requirements to be categorized as a hurricane so the NWS didn't put out a hurricane warning. That combined with Irene being nothing had people being very cavalier about the storm. It was something like an "extra-tropical storm" combined with something else--a stationary front maybe. They now call it SUPERSTORM Sandy.
It was an absolute disaster. Sandy made landfall smack dab here and demolished most of the barrier island, thousands of homes along the bay, knocked out power to homes for weeks and months, etc. Because November and December is a great time of year for no heat, right? Or no home?
Pretty much everyone owns a generator these days. They keep their cars gas tanks full. No one will ever take a hurricane as a non-threat again here at the Jersey Shore.
And of course you know that I LOVE this song!

I would never have guessed that you might like that.
(When I took the trolley ride in Key West they played “Woman Going Crazy on Caroline Street” when we turned onto Caroline.

I agree, especially considering there’s one way out of the Keys.

I don't get the plywood deal either. If your property needs to be covered up, then you need a dry storage area to keep the plywood.
Water I can understand. If electricity goes off and stays off the water pumps don't run and therefore your water is no longer filtered when it comes out of your faucet. Ever noticed dirty water? Yellow water? That's why!

The only hurricane I've been near was Hazel, back in '54. I remember being outside and just loving the warm wind until my mother called me in. I was hoping to fly.

I've sat on my front deck at the other house and watched tornadoes circling around my city. *shrug* I never think to get video of it, though.
