Before I head to Ohio for the weekend golf tournament I’ll sling the first song on you that mentions another song in the lyrics. Hopefully, if you’re still confused (I was born that way, then had a relapse
) about the theme of this countdown, this one will make it clear. So here’s today’s song mentioning another song.
#10: Luckenback, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love) - Waylon Jennings
Here’s an interesting thing about this song: Waylon Jennings stated in his autobiography that he never cared for it. Sure, it mentioned Waylon (and Willie….and Hank Williams, Mickey Newbury, and Jerry Jeff Walker), but Jennings didn’t think it was so good.
I’m sure he cashed the royalty checks, though.
Amid all the name-dropping songwriters Chips Moman and Bobby Emmons threw in a song as well: “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.” At the time, it wasn’t too far removed from the Willie Nelson (who does guest vocals on the last chorus) dirge cover that was a top ten crossover hit; however, this song goes back to the 30s and Roy Acuff.
All that familiarity gave us a song that was a #1 hit in country and pop.

Did anyone other than Waylon or The Chipmunks record it, because I do remember the song but it sounds different.

That's a good one! I believer "Amarillo by Morning" by George Strait is another country classic which mentions the song title.
