Bush Riding for Children with Challenges

The Riding for the Disabled day at Collie started with a bush walk for some of the riders. They had to follow instructions. Turn off the road at the white marker, follow the track through the bush to the big tree, etc. The track at the big tree passed really close to the trunk and, just a few feet off the ground, there was a big swelling. The kids had to reach out and pat the tree as they passed by, which meant they had to be brave enough to put the reins in one hand to do this. Such activities are very easy for most people but for some, it is a big achievement to accomplish such a task.
I couldn’t help thinking how wonderful for these riders to be on a horse, in the bush, going on a no-stress walk. They all have incredible problems which they face with cheerfulness and determination but, just the same, what an experience for them. So many children and adults would never get the chance for such a simple pleasure.
The photo is of four of the bush riders. The man walking next to the piebald (black and white horse) must have covered a lot of miles over the two days. He had two children riding and even managed a ride himself. The second day was open to any riders.

It sounds like it would be great fun for all concerned. I have thought about volunteering at one of those programs..as I think I would like it, however, not sure there are any close by..and I wouldn't want to get stuck caring for the horses, just helping with the kids with mounting dismounting or leading the horses around I would like..I love animals, and if I got to ride a little it would be fun. There could be a local program but not sure.

All the volunteers I've seen help with all the things you mention but not so much with caring for the horses. It's probably something Vin and I would enjoy.

@kobesbuddy That's so nice to hear. Occasionally the weather gods can be very kind.
