Will the weather cooperate? Right now it looks okay, but given our history I’m betting on no. But we’ll see. We can’t wait too long because some of the players have to drive a good distance (like Louisville ) to get home, then go to work tomorrow. While we wait to see what the day will bring I’ll ply you with another song that mentions a song title in the lyrics. And today it’s a two-fer! #7: Please Don’t Bury Me - John Prine In some cases a song’s title might show up coincidentally. John Prine, however, was far too good a songwriter to “accidentally” drop a song title in his lyrics. I’m sure @TheHorse (the other certified John Prine junkie here that I know of) will back me on that. So, amid this incredibly funny song about going crazy with organ donation (“give my stomach to Milwaukee if they run out of beer”), when Prine sang, “Sell my heart to the junk man and give my love to Rose” it was no coincidence that “Give My Love to Rose” is the title of a Johnny Cash song. And, if you think it was a coincidence, Prine doubled down in the last verse by quoting the title of the 1936 hit “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie” in the penultimate line (which proceeded the best line in the entire song: “send my mouth way down south and kiss my ass goodbye”). I wish Prine had died this way (“you slipped upon the floor and hit your head”) instead of how he did die (on a ventilator in a hospital, a victim of COVID-19).
