Do you have a talkative house?

We have been in our new house for about six weeks. It seems a very ‘talkative’ house. At first, there seemed to be a number of noises that we couldn’t identify but we’ve worked them all out now. We were used to the noises of the dish-washer, washing machine and dryer but the fridge is chatty too. We get reminded if we don’t shut the door properly so that is quite a handy one. But every now and then it clunks away for ages and we worked out it’s making its ice-blocks. We haven’t had one that gave chilled water or ice before. But what does it do with the old ice if it needs to make more each day? The other noise which we eventually identified was to do with the air-conditioner controls. Every so often this would play us a little tune. Since we’ve adjusted the zones and temperatures, it no long plays a tune which is a bit sad. I like knowing what is making the noises that I hear so now that I’ve worked them all out, I’m a bit happier. The photo is of the gate on the other side of the house, which is technically the back but looks more like the front. Opposite us is a school carpark. The school is still being built but will open next year.

My house was built in 1950, so it’s quite the noise maker. But then, my body was built in 1960 and it creaks a lot, too.

I never thought about it, but yes, I think somebody not used to the noises of my house would find it chatty. I have a few spots on the floor that are squeaky, the frigs makes a few noises and definitely the washer, it squeaks on spin cycle, the dryer buzzes when it is finished and clunks depending o what is in it, the dish washer makes various water noises. The house is almost as noisy as the kids

@JudyEv sometimes ours sounds like it is going to take off and fly around the room. Some kind of fan makes noise. aggravates me since it is only about 5 years old. seems to young to do those kind of things.

Our fridge gurgles and groans mostly after we've gone to bed. Until we worked out what it was doing, it was pretty disconcerting.

@mom210 I think many appliances are now made to self-destruct after a certain amount of time.

My refrigerator also complains if I do not shut the door. The de-humidifier has a humming sound... well there is this thing that haunts us from years, we hear footsteps on the stairs during the night, but when we check there is no one in the house.

@JudyEv This area was inhabited since very ancient times. Three years ago, when they dug up an area to install fiber optic, they have found buried bones that are several centuries old.

I'm sure our house is too new to have ghosts. It would be a bit unnerving to hear footsteps.

@LadyDuck That's a good point. In Donnybrook we built on the same site where a kit home had burnt down but that didn't make too many strange noises really.

I guess every different house has its own conversations. The things that beep in my house annoy me. It takes a minute to figure out what's wanting my attention.

@JudyEv That really is a good feature. We have to buy a new fridge tomorrow...mine won't get below 44 degrees which is dangerous for food poisoning. So we have no choice. Here they cost as much as some used cars! I don't want the high tech smart refrigerators, but they're all ridiculously expensive.

You do wonder what's happening to create the noises. In our old house, I think the steel would expand and contract according to the temperature.

My aircon create this big sound when it is on. The motor does make noise. And I love the noise though. I don't complain at all as long it will not get louder though in the long run.

@JudyEv yes the wood tend to swell a bit because of the colder weather during rainy season . But it does not get back to its usual wood size. It just stays the same even in hot season.

@Bullshark I didn't know that. thanks for the information. In Australia, the houses used to be quite different from one another but more and more we are seeing blocks of apartments/houses like we used to see in Ireland. All the same but with different coloured front doors. I guess economy of scale is what drives such 'sameness'.

@JudyEv It's funny you should mention that, Mrs. Evans. Just the other day, I was watching a film about Malvina Reynolds, the writer/composer of Little Boxes. Did you know the song was inspired by tract homes in Daly City, California? According to her daughter, she penned down the lyrics as she and her husband drove through the city streets.

I've a talkative fridge, a Kenmore. The manual says it'll make noises, machine area in the back. I got accustomed to it. Behind my stove, are pipes. At night, it's very quiet, so I hear a gurgling sound ...I go to it and listen. It's from behind my stove where pipes are. You're lucky, your fridge squawks that door is open, mine doesn't. I've awaken to a freezer door open to my horror!!! So when I'm going to bed, my habit is to push on both fridge doors shut.

@oahuwriter That's true but if the power goes off perhaps and you don't realise then food can spoil. Of course if the power goes off but no-one opens the fridge then the food keeps for quite a time.

@JudyEv Understood. But most still frozen, even ice cubes not thawed so everything was ok. It was just ajar and must not have been long ajar.

We get some noises from our fridge now and then, and the boiler sometimes makes a noise. We started hearing this ding dong noise and I didn't know what it was. I knew it wasn't our doorbell, because our doorbell has a different sound to that. But then I realised it was next doors doorbell when a delivery man went to their address and then we heard the ding dong noise again!

@JudyEv Yes, well our house is semi-detached and our living room wall is right next to their living room wall and the sounds travel easily through the wall. We only have small porches also that lead directly into the living room so that's why the sound of next doors doorbell can be heard in our living room!

@JudyEv - It is always strange to move into a new house and have to get used to sounds that it makes! It can be hard to sleep the first few nights, when you don't know what is causing the various sounds! LOL I hope you are enjoying your new retirement home. I'm going to go through some of your recent posts to see what you have to say about it. Interesting that they are building a school so near a retirement community. I assume there are family homes nearby, too!

@JudyEv That's a great way to look at it ... by the time the kids are teens, you'll be gone! There's a lot of advantages to being in a retirement community, but have other age groups nearby. You have privacy and security, but the advantages of a mixed use community, too.

There are dozens of family homes in the area with new homes going up all over the place. Just at the end of our street is a coffee shop and young couples pushing strollers, pregnant ladies, grandparents with toddlers, stream past our place every day. And they all seem to have a designer dog in tow! Hopefully by the time all the kids are young delinquents hooning around in noisy cars, we'll be gone.

@DeborahDiane The 150- odd houses are within a gated area but we're still surrounded by younger people. A new community centre is going on although we have a small one of our own and soon, I understand a large supermarket will be quite close by.
