I thought it was dead

The part of my yard I am mowing has trees hanging over it. Some parts of the branches are rotten.
I have been pulling the dead branches off, as they just snap. So, I pulled on one. Only a little broke off.
I noticed there was a birds nest in the fork of the dead branches. In it is one baby bird. I guess I will leave the branch for now.

Only one? I wonder what happened to the rest.

We have had some rough weather, wonder if any others could have blown out. It looks half grown, is covered in a dark down. I did not examine too closely for fear I would disturb a parent.

@BarBaraPrz I have never heard that we have cuckoos. I saw a male cardinal out my back window today, and wonder if that is the parent.

@GardenGerty Do cuckoos live in your area? I understand they kick out one egg in some other bird's nest and lay one of their own. Then when it hatches, the cuckoo may kick out the other eggs/chicks.

This one is not big enough yet. I wonder if something happened to the others. Or if I did not look really carefully. I am wondering if it is a cardinal because I have them year around.

@GardenGerty I hope the others did not fell out from the nest. It happens here, I find some very tiny babies fallen from their nests.

Me too. I did not look really closely after I saw the bird.

I hope so too, but this nest is only about 5 ft off the ground.

@GardenGerty Many will build too close to the ground. I get scared for the babies.
