I saw a cigarette butt

The photo has nothing to do with the post but is a reminder of where we used to live. We have moved to an over-55s village. The surrounding area houses a great many young families, who all seem to own designer dogs. At the end of our street is a very well patronised coffee shop. It also sells milk. We walked there this morning as we were out of milk. We also had two vouchers for free coffees so we enjoyed a coffee while we were there. On the way home, I saw a cigarette butt on the ground. This is so unusual nowadays that I pointed it out to Vince. Smoking has become pretty much socially unacceptable in Australia and those that smoke are mostly confined to specific areas. It’s rare to see butts on the ground. When I was growing up, it was very ‘in’ to smoke although I never took it up.

That's good that you don't see many butts. It's a filthy habit really.

@JudyEv when I was first a teacher you could still smoke in the teacher's lounge (no longer in the school but in the lounge). i opened the door to the lounge my first lunch - the smoke was so thick I ate in my room the rest of the year. they banned smoking in lounges that summer!

Always enjoy a pic of the roos. Smoking in our country has, in many cases, turned to vaping. Just as bad for you; but the kids think it's cool.

Here, there are some dog breeds that are more popular than others. There are a lot of little dogs in the area - Shih Tzu crosses are popular and also spitzs, chihuahuas and bull terriers.

@judyev I’ve just learned a new word that you probably already use, and it applies to people who drop butts all over the place - boofheads.

@popciclecold Years ago, they'd toss their butts out the window of a moving car. A lot of fires were started that way.

Here, we see small groups of employees at the backs of large businesses all have their smoke. They have to be permitted x minutes a day to go outside and smoke.

Saw in the news about the protests in Sydney about the extended lock-down. Is it really that bad there? Hope you are far away from the protests.

I don't know Australia's not accepting smoking in the open. Is it official from the government or the society view on it? In Malaysia, the government is slowly trying to ban smoking in public area. Of course some would rebel against this. Lots were fined too for breaking the law.

You rarely see people smoking in the street but it's not against the law. At least, I don't think it is.

I agree but when I was young, all my peer group wanted to smoke as soon as they were old enough. Many smoked behind their parents' back.
