Let's talk about reselling

I put myself on "vacation mode" while I was gone. This is just a toggle that makes your listings invisible until you turn it back on. I turned mine back on on Saturday, listed something on Sunday and sold that thing within ten minutes. I just came back from the post office where I dropped the items off and they are on their way up to Pennsylvania. I also went by the dollar tree for some necessities and then to the goodwill closer to my house. I found a few things there that I am in the process of listing. One item is pokemon cards and I need to do some research to find out of these will be worth anything. I paid only $1.00 for an album of them, and even if I can't sell them online, I anticipate a return on the cards by selling them to the thrift store. At this rate, even $2.00 is a profit. Oh and I found an old dirt devil for myself. I'm hoping to average around $30 a month with reselling things. $30 will cover the cost of my phone bill. Do you resell things?

No, I don't. Pretty used to until I got tired of going to the Post Office every day for her. I told her she could make the trip or she could stop selling things. So she stopped.

Well now she could start again and have the mail carrier pick it up for her if she wanted. That would require a printer or label maker though. I might consider that route myself if I actually make a good return, but at the moment it's hit and miss.

@DaddyEvil That's such a huge hassle. Guess you're pretty rural then. I feel like some areas have those post office drop off things at like super market parking lots. None near you?

@ScribbledAdNauseum We have a printer and postal scales but they don't pick up packages here. We have to take them to the Post Office. The route carriers here are all on foot so they can't carry packages. (We even have to pick up packages sent to us from the Post Office.)

I pick projects. I'll buy junk and restore the item and then resell it for a huge profit on my investment. I don't resell in the same way as you but reselling is fun and you can make good money at it. We both put effort in to resell, just in different ways.

You're right about that. I saw some copper cake pans today at goodwill and thought about getting them to resell but wasn't sure if I would get a good return. Some looked in good shape, others I'd have to figure out how to properly clean. Didn't feel it was worth getting special cleaner for a potential one time sell.

@ScribbledAdNauseum If I were to count the hours I put in on a project, I'd be making a tiny amount per hour but I enjoy the work. If special cleaners are needed, I'll sometimes look for substitutes that will work. Items I already have here at home.

@Vikingswest1 Sounds like a profitable hobby then, even if it's just a few trickles of a penny. I'd like to learn to sell more things, but don't think I'd ever do anything that required more than a quick cleaning. I also sell via shipping only, and I know a lot of those clean up projects are cost prohibitive for shipping.

Lots of people are now. I feel like at least a few people in goodwill today were there for that purpose.

I think it's fun and it's helpful to get that extra money. Now I am actively seeking items to resell and not just items I've already woned.

@Hannihar Absolutely. I try not to lower the price more than $5 so I am still making a decent profit.

@ScribbledAdNauseum If one needs the money it is great when what you post sells for the amount you were asking for.

We had a lot of collectibles that I tried selling online. Now it's too difficult for me to run around setting up items and taking pictures, etc. Most I just give to Goodwill. Good luck with the reselling.

I need to think of a stage (cardboard box / lighting) if I continue this.

@LindaOHio That's awesome and I bet it was a cheap little light, wasn't it? Those can be pretty powerful as long as you don't use them all the time.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Good idea. We have a big clip-on light that I used to use with an aluminum shade that reflects the light.

Thank You! It's a nice little hobby I think, plus just fun to find things. I found a Clue (1985) jigsaw puzzle that I want to work once and then try to sell to the thrift store.

@CarolDM Thank You! I am definitely trying to do that. Re-selling makes me happy and obviously provides me with some spare change.

Son told me some of those Pokemon cards are very valuable. I have a few here that he had when he was a kid, but I think they are just run of the mill ones. Techincally they belong to him anyway.

I'm hoping there are some good ones here, but I imagine the collectors would know what would sell and donate the rest. Even so, it was worth the $4.00 (I spent $4 instead of the $1 I thought / forgot I had).

I do, mostly vintage and collectable items, and mostly through eBay and Etsy. It's only a part-time thing at the moment, since I'm not earning consistently. Some months I make a small profit, just as often I'm losing money. I've got hopes of developing it into a full-time living but I'm still a good way off from that. It's more fun than the day jobs I work to pay the rent though.

Do you make out decently with Etsy? I feel like they've increased selling fees over the years and people are steering away from them. However, I have seen etsy has a large vintage community there.

@VictorFrankenstein I've listed one thing there but have not received any interest in it (as far as I'm aware). I've also tried on mercari to the same effect. Facebook Marketplace has been steady for me, and this is with using shipping only.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I do about as well on Etsy as I do on eBay. I'm not doing brilliantly on either at the moment, but I do think it's still a viable selling platform. And it is a bit easier to use. Ebay seems obsessed with nagging its customers into adding loads of item specifics these days.
