....Don't ever toss out your old medical stuff!!!! Last night I was a little on the worried side. I had dropped something on my foot, and a ugly "golf ball" bruise formed. While I could walk on it, it did hurt. Fortunately for me, I broke my ankle six years ago. (Well, not fortunately, but....) So I had all the equipment here for self-treatment! The wheelchair is a "companion chair," which belonged to my dear mother of blessed memory. It's about 25 years old, maybe a little older. The walking boot came from my broken ankle. And the crutches were hand-me-downs from my brother. So I dragged all this stuff out and treated the ankle. By this evening the lump was gone (thanks to God and lots of ice packs) and the pain is just a dull "oh, you idiot, you did it again didn't you" ache. No pain or problems walking. So all of that medical stuff I've accumulated over the years came in very handy today, and saved me a trip to the ER or the doctor. If you're a klutz like me, keep those old crutches. You never know when you'll need 'em again!! The perfect song for a klutz

Isn't a walking boot, crutches and a wheel chair overkill for a bruise?

Sure, but I'm a hypochondriac!! I ended up using them all....NOT at the same time, though. I used the boot and crutches to put the squirrel food out this morning. The brace was inside the house, and the wheelchair was "just in case."

@FourWalls You mean you didn't use the crutches as paddles to make the chair go?

That's what I told Pretty when she was sorting through our stuff before we moved two years ago. (She was sorting because I was working 12 hour days while she got us ready to move.) She insisted on giving them away because we'd never need them again. So far, she's right but I still wanted to keep them, just in case.

We had to fight to get that companion chair. Medicare will give a wheelchair but NOT a companion chair (they're smaller, with smaller wheels, and fit in the car more easily, so naturally they're more expensive ), so the doctor had to verify that my mom didn't have the respiratory function to propel herself in a "regular" wheelchair. Remembering everything she had to go through, there's no way I'm getting rid of it!

@FourWalls Yeah, I can understand that. We didn't have to go through any long processes to get the equipment we had but we did have to pay for it all. I guess I'm just cheap. I don't want to pay for something I already own(ed) again.

@DaddyEvil -- absolutely. You never know when the rules are going to change with the insurance companies and suddenly "we're not going to pay for that."

So glad you had the equipment to save a trip to the doctor. For years I've saved a splint from thumb and a complicated sling thing from rotator cuff surgery. Then I remembered they put you in that stuff before you wake from the operation, so I got rid of it. Of course my insurance paid for it (nice bonus for them!) and my insurance premiums went up. Anyway, hope you mend soon! From one klutz to another.

There's no pain in the foot anymore, except right at the point of contact. And even that isn't hurting that much. Trip on in to the klutz konvention anytime!

You're absolutely right. I have a wheelchair that my mom needed and a set of crutches from someone's injury (don't remember who). Never know when you might need them. Glad your foot got better and you didn't need a trip to the ER

Glad it is good today. I hate using crutches. I just limp around.

Glad to hear that you're better. Our fourth bedroom looks like a medical supply company. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes...We use all of them; so there will be no getting rid of anything.

You poor thing, glad you're okay, now. I've no my Mom's things, and was going to donate it to a thrift store. But I'll keep it, now. I shopped for them for her.
