Welcome to a smoking top ten, featuring songs that have “smoke” in the title. This will be the counterbalance to the other countdown of Bee Gees songs, just in case you don’t like them. If you don’t like either, well, thanks for stopping by. Let’s get smoking! #10: Smokin’ - Boston I was absolutely tired of Boston’s first album by the end of side one. Side two didn’t offer any promise for me to like it better as it began (“Rock and Roll Band”), either. And, of course, it sells a gazillion copies and becomes one of those albums that “classic rock” just can’t quit playing (well, the songs on side one, anyway). Looking back 45 years from first buying that album, there’s one song from that album I can actually stand to listen to without grimacing: “Smokin’.” My problem with Boston is that they sounded too much alike on everything, which (as a number of people quoted in Wikipedia point out) set the stage for the formulaic “FM rock” that took the place of hearing “Whipping Post” after “Life on Mars?” on the radio.
