How can we save our planet.

I buy less and I recycle a lot. But that is just one person. We need everyone. A couple of years ago I went to the company that had sold me the cellphone. I wasn´t listening well. The young man who checked it told me to buy another one. And I´m afraid that those are the typical words we hear for everything. I was not going to buy another one. My retirement pension accepts just one luxury in a year and those are holidays because for me they mean health. So I discovered that if I clicked on the button for no hands, I could listen and be hears. End of the problem. In my country it is now forbidden to give plastic bags at the shops and supermarkets. I have my own silk bag that can be placed into my purse. Lately I have been buying online. They bring everything in thick paper bags. I use them for the garbage, others for the truck that come to get the items that will be recycled. Still in my country there is a lot that goes to big waste lands. A lot of that could be saved. Do you do any recycling?

@jefferson126 We can make sturdy bags for the supermarket with old jeans. And they can be washed.

We do when in an area that is accepting recycled materials. We don't have that option in our little town.

We do what we can. We can make our food from scratch and use less tins. I think that the only can I use at home are tuna cans once in a while. I make my legumes soaking them the day before.

Yes, but it's more about money here. I have a recycling bin that I fill up and a truck that comes once a week to empty it. However, I have to pay for the luxary. Unlike those who chose to litter (a huge problem in the U.S.) I refuse to. If I do, it's because I missed a bin and didn't realize it.

@marguicha It should be, but here in the U.S. it isn't. The bins they offer for recycling are small, the bins they offer for household waste are huge. We have to pay for both, but if you want to encourage people to recycle, charging them for it, isn't helpful.

We do a lot of recycling here in Switzerland. Every week I bring all my glass bottles to the recycle bin, the white and green bottles separated go there. The plastic bottles go in another container, the tin cans in another. We bring back the broken appliances to no matter which store that sells appliances. The paper is collected every months and the garden waste is collected every week in summer. Plastic is banned, no more disposable plastic bags in the stores as well no more plastic glasses, cups, spoons and so on.

@marguicha Switzerland is ranked number 5 among the best recycling countries in the world. Number 1 is Germany with a recycling rate of 56.1%, Switzerland is recycling 49.7%. The United States only recycle 32%, they are even down from an almost 35% a few years ago.

If I lived in the country, I might make a compost bin as I had 3 decades ago in another house.

@marguicha My trash is mostly plastic and metal. I dont count food scraps as they go to the critters. Paper can be burned but we toss it mostly. At least it does brake down good

Some supermarkets no longer give plastic bags here. Not a problem for me as well as I would usually carry foldable shopping bags in my bag.

I have no opportunity to recycle anything, I have received groceries in paper bags and also have used them for garbage, There are still too many plastic bags being used but I guess it is a good sign that my groceries more often are delivered in thick paper bags and other times in boxes no plastic at all,

We have to take our own bags to the supermarket too. I recycle as much as possible. We also get 10c back on some plastic bottles if we take them to certain outlets.

no plastic bags at the shops - AMAZING. some stores here give paper bags, but some still use plastic ones. unfortunately, i don't do much except when throwing trash in garbage cans for plastic, electronics and that... and i carry my backpack or tote bag instead of getting plastic bags.

Plastic bags usage has been reduced here..still there is little bit of usage but much less than before. We do recycle almost all waste except for plastic at home..we don't do anything in specific we just convert it into cow dung vermicompost..and use it for our farms
