Someone from Antarctica has been using my Reddit account

At least that's what the email said. The email contained a link I had to click on in order to "solve the problem with my account" It is just one of those fake emails which ask you click on something in order to steal your information, and I deleted it without clicking on anything, but why Antarctica? If they had written Europe or something like that it would have been more believable... I told my husband and he said: "I think I know why. Denmark is in the north, the person who wrote the email probably doesn't know the difference between the Arctic and Antarctica" Maybe he is right What do you think? Did you ever receive scam emails about Antarctica?

Yes, the person probably didn't get a good grade in geography I have received many other scam emails, but it is the first time that someone wrote about Antarctica.

@Porcospino The only people in Antarctica are scientists and I think they have more important things to do than send scam emails.

I think it would be quite easy to find out who had done it, since there's not a lot of people in Antactica. Not that it's likely that someone did, but I would have picked a continent with people on/in.

I read that the internet in Antarctica is pretty bad/slow, and I think that the few people who are there have better things to do. If I were there I would prefer to write emails to my family when I finally managed to get online.

@Porcospino That sounds very likely. Most people there are scientists I suppose, so they'd be busy doing research, not sending e-mails from other peoples e-mails.

@MALUSE I also used to receive marriage proposals from Africa. I still get marriage proposals - but only from Russian women who think that I am a man

There was time that I received marriage proposals from Africa. They stopped. I miss them! They were very entertaining.
In the early years of my online life marriage proposals used to find their way to my e-mail account. How that was possible I’ve never understood. Where did they...

I don't have an Instagram account, but I have received similar emails about other sites. I usually change my password pretty often just in case.

What I get occasionally is e-mails telling me to pay a certain sum (usually around 200 Euro) because I've done something against the law and will be sued if I don't pay. The mails are always rather vague and it never becomes clear what kind of crime I'm suppposed to have committed. The punishments which await me are described in great detail, though. Praised be the internet where one can find warnings against all kinds of scams!!

@MALUSE That's a popular modus operandi of the scammers here as well, sometimes they even do it through text messages and phone calls. You won't believe how many people still fall for them.

@cahaya1983 Sadly, this is the case. One should never be too trustful.

It is a scam. Poor geographical knowledge of the scammer.

My first thought would be penguin using your email. They should try a country with more population and less cold next time.

I never thought of that, but I think you are right, it must be the penguins Yes, if they choose a different area the email will seem less unrealistic.

I never follow the links that I receive through the emails. I usually go directly to the site, login in and (just to play safe) I change my password.

@Porcospino The links sent by mail can be really dangerous, people try to steal passwords and our data.

Haha that is funny. I once watched a video of some people trying to "scam" the scammers, it's hilarious!

I watched some of those videos too. There is a guy on YouTube who often makes that kind of videos. Some them are hilarious. I watched a video where he pretended to be very stupid and some of the scammers patiently tried to explain what he had to do. They didn't realize that he was scamming them

@Porcospino Haha in one of the videos I watched the scammer started to realize at the end that he was being played and he started becoming upset and ended up hanging up because he lost his patience.
