Movie watch : Epic Bollywood movie Lagaan (2001)

If someone were to ask me about Indian movies that were worthy of an Oscar in the Best Foreign movie category, one of my top choices would be Lagaan : Once Upon a Time in India (2001). Recently, I saw this again with my family and enjoyed it again. Apart from being a well made period movie, this was sent to Oscar but could not win the award. The story plot is about a village in Central Provinces : Champaner in the year 1893 in British India. The villagers are finding it tough to pay the lagaan (tax in form of a crop share)since last two years due to drought. They appeal through the King to Captain Russell, the head of local British cantonment. However the arrogant Captain Russell keeps a ridiculous proposal that if the villagers defeat a team of British officers in a cricket match, he would waive off their Tax - Lagaan for 3 years, else the villagers would pay 3 times tax. The villagers accept this and then the story shows how a team of totally novice but determined Villagers defeats the team of arrogant Captain Russell. The villagers are also aided by Russell's sister Elizabeth. For me it is one of the best mix of Art movie form and commercial Bollywood.
