...'Why are you still wearing a face mask and shield?' At first, I was so puzzled why she drop this question. She continued her case by explaining it. According to her, I do not need them since I am fully vaccinated. Of course, I told her that vaccines cannot fully protect us, especially with the new variants of covid at present. How can you explain this to a young kid? Image Credit: cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net

That is a good question. Kids are fed all kinds of propaganda about the vaccines being safe that they cannot understand what could go wrong.

But only with the original covid, the variants that are showing up may prove immune to those vaccines.

@rebelann It is scarier to be infected with these covid variants.

I agree. I told her that most of these vaccines can only lessen the seriousness of covid if being infected.

You are right. You are lucky because she knows and she is aware of what’s happening around her,

It is nice that she is so aware of what's going on in our world now. I sometimes think that it's a pity for her to have home schooling with online classes.

@Mavic123456 I am sure she is. I always tell her to read first her modules before checking or adding more information about her lessons.

Make sure that you are guiding her in online classes. @Shavkat this is what I noticed in my online class students learn more if parents are there to guide them during the class.

I would say something like "vaccines can't fully protect against exposure to the virus, at a certain time there will be new variants" So wear the mask must be.

Indeed. I am sure she got the real facts about why we still need to wear them. Did you have your vaccines now?

Sometimes, it's hard for adults to get their heads around these things, let alone kids.

I also think that they need to slow down in learning new things. With our little miss here, it needs to tell things as much as possible accurately.

You explained it well to her, what more could you say? Is lying all right? You told her the truth! My daughter worked as an RN. She was fully vaccinated and got COVID. Because she was fully vaccinated, it only lasted 8 days and she was fully recovered and back to work!

I guess you just answered her the correct answer. We still need those since you could still get infected despite being vaccinated. And with the new variant, the transmissibility is very fast so there is really a need to take extra precautions and still there are those that are unvaccinated that may be carrying the virus around and could affect you still despite being vaccinated.

@Shavkat That is somewhat true but the vaccine's guarantee is just very limited to preventing the virus from getting the worse of what it can do. But we can still be infected with any of the variants around if we do not protect ourselves from the virus.

I also heard that the Delta variant is resistant to the vaccines that we have at present. That's why it is scarier.

@rsa101 I overheard that we have 6 cases of Delta variants now. Regardless, they are not from my hometown.

I will tell the kid that vaccination will only help us to fight the virus when we get them. Therefore, we still have to be careful because we can still have the virus.

Just say it like how you said it. Vaccines are deterrents but you still have to practice health protocols.

It is a part of our living to wear them now. Thus, we need to be religiously doing the health protocols.

It is difficult to be sure. I suggest drawing a picture to explain how viruses travel, and the new issue with the breakaway virus. Pictures really helped me when my mother explained the facts of life to me. I wish I still had those pictures! There also might be some YouTube videos with suggestions on how to explain this to kids. I hope this works out for you. Good luck!

I assumed that she had seen some of these videos. Perhaps she was a bit confused about the vaccine thing. She thought that you are fully protected if being vaccinated. I tried my best to explain the facts to her and hopefully, she understood the concept.
