Thursday Didn't Start Out Very Good

I woke up today to go out and check on Chicken Little. I put her in one of the coops with the adult chickens late yesterday at dusk. I hug around and watched her for several minutes before going back inside. She wasn't being chased, harrassed or picked on so I went inside. This morning I walked out and was looking for her in the coop. I didn't see her. I was looking for her by her coloring. She has light colored flight feathers with one dark feather on each side. I got alarmed when I didn't see her so got inside the coop to take a better look. I found her hidden up inside the opening to a cement block. She was seeking protection. However, she was bleeding and her back had been pecked up pretty good when I got her out. She was missing all of her tail feathers and that was why I didn't see her at first. I got her out of the coop and doctored her up. She wasn't bleeding anymore but her back was raw. I put her back in the grow out cage and will leave her there until she heals. I may try putting her in the other coop when we try this again. I think she will be okay and just needs some time to heal. She was standing up fine and both eating and drinking. I kept an eye on her all day and she is still moving around good, eating and drinking. Photo Credit: Pixabay, Public Domain

@wolfgirl569 Yes, it is by one of the coops. I thought of that and may try that. She is perky again today so I think she will be fine. One of my daughters will be checking on her for me this week since we are heading to the beach.

Yes, they can be. I figured this was going to be hard with only one new one going in all by herself.

@kareng Is the grow out pen by one of the chicken runs? If not when she is healed set up a cage in the one you want her in and put her in there during the day. They cant beat her up but can start getting to know her

That was a risk you took . You can watch her with the others in the day time after she gets completely cured and see how the situation is.

You don't move them in the daytime. They can see her and attack then. When you do it a dusk or dark, they are more likely not to see her or pay any attention to her. She was probably attacked after daybreak today.

@allknowing Maybe not. I'll try the other coop when she heals. Not worrying about it right now.

I'm lucky she didn't get torn to pieces. Going to let her heal up and then we will see about adding her to the other coop. If not,I don't know. She may stay in the grow out pen all alone.

@kareng I have to ask Why is she being singled out and attacked?

@RasmaSandra Because her application wasn't submitted to Medicaid she owes the nursing home for 4 months at full price. She doesn't have the money and I don't either. That is the only reason I know. Medicaid denied going back and picking up her charges for previous 3 months. I should have appealed that. The reason they gave was money that had been taken out of her bank accounts...money stolen by my brother and his girlfriend.

I'm sorry the other chickens pecked her badly. I'm glad she's doing better now that you took her out of there.

Chickens are interesting creatures. They have a definite system of hierarchy. plus, they are the closest relatives to dinosaurs left on earth!

They really do. If is fascinating to put some in after dark and no trouble at all. Yet if daylight they go beserk.

@kareng i remember that - my folks were still traveling for work so I would often stay the house (mini-farm) and collect eggs. I remember watching the dinosaurs in the yard. amazed at how aggressive they can be.

Glad you were able to save her. You couldn't have known she wouldn't be completely safe. She just wasn't ready yet, apparently.

Adding one alone is a lot harder than adding 3 or 4. All the attention is on that one instead of 3-4 or more.

@sallypup It's hard. Then when you do make decision to try something bad happens like this. I would really love to have another small coop added on and let her be the queen of that coop. I don't think hubby is going to want to do that though. He already has a couple of projects going on. We will see.

@kareng I have one hen all by herself cause her mates passed on. I have two other hens in another pen but I am scared to put all three together though I think the one is lonesome by herself- next to a pen of two ducks but no hens.

Poor little thing. Animals can be ruthless if they take a set against one.

Yep, She will stay in the grow out pen for awhile until she heals. And there forever if need be. I think it wouldn't be hard to add on another small coop. The hubby needs another project..haha.

@JudyEv The problem with that is I will be needing this pen next spring for babies when they are all feathered out. It's not really big enough for multiple birds long term. I will figure something out soon.

@kareng I wonder how it would go to later put just one other hen in with her. Then add another later.

She is going to stay in the grow out pen until she heals. I will probably put her in a cage and then put the cage in the coop (ther other one this time) for her to get used to the other chickens and for them to get used to her. Hopefully that will work. If not she will get a new coop or stay in grow out pen until we figure out how to house her.
