This may sound wrong, and I don’t want to give the wrong impression. I am very happy that I went to Mount Rushmore today. I suppose there’s some “patriotic obligation” to go see it, because it just screams “America” to you. It’s on the South Dakota license plates!!! Still, upon leaving I couldn’t help but feel I’d been to the biggest tourist trap around. And the US government owns it!!! There’s not a lot to see inside that you can’t see outside, except for things like the gift shop (cha-ching!). My advice would be to go see it, but save your $10 parking and see it from a number of roadside pull-offs for free. But, as I said, I’m very happy I got to see it in person. I remember when my grandparents went there on vacation. (I get my roaming from them, I guess.) The gigantic mountainside carvings of the faces of four presidents — and if you’re wondering why Teddy Roosevelt is included, it’s because he’s basically the father of the National Park system — is beautiful. The walkway of the flags, with all 50 states and the territories (I told my brother it’d be my luck that I’d finally get to all 50 states and they’d make Puerto Rico and Guam states ), is lovely. I took selfies by the plaques of the states I’ve lived in (five). But, honestly, it didn’t take me very long to see everything. If you go to South Dakota, DO see it. Just don’t fall for the government’s tourist trap.

I always looked at stuff as helping people afford to eat. If broke I would take your advice which is usually, but if I had money, do not see anything wrong blowing 20 to 40 bucks so people can eat and plus goes to maintenance. Those are rocks, they erode. George Washington's needs touching up sometimes. I do not think you ever have to worry about Puerto Rico or Guam ever wanting to be part of the US with the way we going about things but it was very funny.

Thanks for the good advice, This is one monument I have always wanted to see. Did you see anything of Crazy Horse?

I would definitely not pay $10 to park. I would like to see the monument though.

Senior rate is $5. So there’s that.

@FourWalls Well, that's better anyway. But if you can see it from other locations, I think I'd do that.

@LindaOHio — there’s even a pull off where you can see the profile of Washington (the only one you can see from that vantage point).

it is one of those things you see once in person. Unlike the Grand Canyon (4 times and one more planned for spring), or the Statue of LIberty (every day for 11 months)! there are things you just see once. Mt Rushmore is a one time thing for me

Yep, it’s a Griswold stop.
In this scene, Clark rushes the other Griswold's at the Grand Canyon.

It must be amazing to see it in person but I doubt I'll ever get there to see it myself.

I find it hard to imagine how they managed to do this and so well. Let's just hope one of the noses doesn't tumble off one day.
