Asking for Help

Greece
October 6, 2021 11:10am CST
Here on MyLot we share our worries and concerns quite openly and we can be sure that a number of people will respond in a helpful way. We have established relationships even though we are comparatively strangers living in different countries around the world. Are we as willing to ask for help from neighbours and friends when sudden practical help is needed at home? Or are we more inclined to cope as best we can on our own? A plea on social network can be ignored, but a knock on someone’s door might be a nuisance for them and an embarrassment for the one with the problem. Some of us may live in close communities and others in semi isolation so it would be interesting to hear your views. What kind of help have you received or given to people in your community?

When I moved into this neighborhood, I was 27 years old. Many of my neighbors were older or elderly. I shoveled snow. I cleaned gutters. I weed trimmed and mowed. I fixed fences. I did many things for my neighbors. Now I'm almost 60 years old. A young man came by here last week and helped me weed trim my front yard. Full circle now.

That is perfect when it works both ways. You are lucky to have two very good neighbours, and they are lucky to have you!

I help when I can, but we aren't always aware of the need. I dontated blood the other week and bought apples that went toward food banks in the community. My home insurance who lives in the community helped me with some things I needed to do at a very reasonable price.

People can be too proud to ask for help even though they know there are kind people around who would lend a hand if they knew the need. You are aware of other's needs and that is wonderful.

We were the younger people on the block for a long time--now, the kids are grown and have kids of their own--and we all sort of watch out for each other and help the elderly couple across the street.

This sounds like a lovely place to live when even the elderly are watched over.

We are generous donars to charities we trust and believe in. We have neighbors and friends who’ve helped us out as we have done for them. Before covid, I volunteered in a women’s shelter and read to toddlers at our local library.

. I have had a neighbor ask me to borrow money and I lent it. I’ve had a neighbor ask me to let her bring her kids to my appointment when her lights went out and I did.I also had a neighbor ask me to go to her apartment with her because she thought someone had broken in which I did and nothing was amiss. Once Leo fell down and couldn’t get up. I ran downstairs to a neighbors apartment and he rushed up and got Leo onto his feet. He was a large strong man to be able to do that because Leo was heavy.

You are a very helpful person Ruby and a brave one. Going to an apartment to check up if someone had broken into it was well above the ordinary help requests,

@RubyHawk Sometimes when we get concerned we forget the dangers.

My neighbors are younger, they always come to shovel the snow in winter. I offer them some of the vegetables I grow. I keep their cat when they go skiing during one week in winter. When I do not know something of local habits I ask them.

I used to look after my neighbour's cats. They were no trouble at all,. She had a cat flap so they went in and out whenever the need moved them and for the rest of the time they enjoyed having the house to themselves.

@41CombedaleRoad I like cats, the ginger cat of my neighbors is a sweet cat and he is not a source of problems. The one abandoned that I adopted is moody.

I gave needed supplies to the young couple with the new baby across the street at the start of the pandemic when they couldn't find toilet paper and baby wipes in the stores. I've given rides to the young man next door when his car broke down and loaned him my phone several times. The neighbor on the other side of us volunteered to mow the lower part of our yard when we were having trouble with our mower. Last summer we picked up and delivered boxes of vegetables when they weren't able to get out and about after his heart attack. Several times he has come over and done something in our yard that needed doing but we hadn't gotten to it yet.

I am reminded of that saying 'the best way to get a friend is to be one'. this applies to you and to so many who have responded to my post.
