The End

Three years ago yesterday — October 18, 2018 — I went to my most recent concert. Tonight that drought was supposed to break, with my niece and I going to see the Felice Brothers. Instead, the realization that the Robbie Fulks/Linda Gail Lewis show in Indianapolis will probably be my final concert set in. Why? There are a boatload of reasons. Most of them physical. I can’t stand for long periods of time anymore. I carry a cane that converts to a seat with me when I go shopping, because I simply cannot take the pain of standing in a checkout line for five minutes. If that hurts, imagine five HOURS of standing at a concert. I knew this was getting to be a problem when I saw Robbie’s year-end show in Chicago one year. After the show, instead of chatting with friends, I was leaned over backward across the stage edge, trying to get my back to unlock. I’d been standing (and dancing, but generally “not walking anywhere”) from 7 PM until nearly 1 AM. My back gave me more crap than customer service reps get the day after Christmas when all the returns start coming in. Then there’s my hearing. I have some hearing loss, which is common in people my age, even without having spent four years working around military aircraft. I don’t hear everything that anyone says to me anymore. More significantly, music sounds weird. The best way I can describe it is the music sounds like it’s in the key of G and the singing sounds like it’s in Bb or something. I agreed to go see the Felice Brothers with my niece because I love her and I like the Felice Brothers. We’d seen them together once before and we had a blast. That was in 2015, just six years ago. I feel a lot worse than six years older now, though. Unfortunately, my niece — in a display of the “gracefulness” gene that has all but mandated that everyone in the family wear t-shirts that say “I do all my own stunts” — tripped over her bed yesterday and hurt her knees. No serious damage, but sore enough to make her realize she couldn’t stand for three or four hours at the show, either. PLUS drive here from Lexington. THEN drive home. So we canceled. In an almost confirming post-script, the VA called and left a message today regarding the knee x-ray I had yesterday. They want to put me in physical therapy for my knee. NOW. So, as far as concerts go, it’s the end. Don’t think it wasn’t fun, though. I had a great time getting this old! One of my favorite people to see over the past decade, Dale Watson:

I've only been to one concert and while I had fun, decided I didn't enjoy fighting with the two girls who paid for the seats directly in front of us. They wanted to stand during the entire performance. I didn't. We paid for seats so we could be comfortable while enjoying the concert. I finally told them I'd start "spilling" drinks on them if they didn't sit down. One drink later, they sat down.

Yeah, that’s another problem with age: I’m not able to beat ‘em up anymore. You bring up a good point: with the passage of time, manners are disappearing. That means the one or two bad cases I’ve had over the years will tend to become more commonplace. I don’t have the effort or patience to deal with it. Another thing the pandemic has taught: live streaming, watching at home for ten bucks, is great. Yes, it’s not the same; however, there’s no 300 mile drive to the show and night in a hotel. And the unruly drunks. As I told Joy, God has blessed me with total contentment over this. I’m not the least bit sad.

@DaddyEvil — ah, those were the days. I did have to leave my second-ever rock concert (Summer Jam II, in 1978) because I was so freaking sick from the heat and the pot smoke. Yeah, ocean air smells much better and gives a much better high.

@FourWalls No fighting the traffic trying to leave the concert, no waiting in lines while police give Breathalyzer tests as you leave the parking lot, no long lines to get in to the concert, no people screaming loud enough to deafen you when the band comes out on stage and no getting sick from all the pot smoke from the people smoking around you, either.

It might be safe to go see the Stones, since half the audience and half the band will be on walkers or in wheelchairs.

So sorry to hear that this is the end of an era for you in going to concerts. I would probably be in the same boat and not be able to stand for that long.

@FourWalls Yep, there is a fine line I have to be aware of with the Fibro and if it is crossed I pay the price.

I really am at peace with it. I think the lockdown helped a lot, especially when a lot of acts I like started doing Facebook live shows.

I totally understand. I've been unable to cook or do any kind of standing or extended walking for almost 10 years. After our last mini trip I realized that I couldn't handle sleeping sitting up in a bed because I couldn't walk when I got up due to the back pain. This puts the end to any idea of traveling. We should have done more traveling when we were younger. I really empathize with you and wish your prognosis was better.

My prognosis is okay. I just don’t want to push the luck any. And, given the option, I’d really rather go to the Keys.

@FourWalls Don't you dare go without me! We spent last evening watching the webcams on Duval Street. Fantasy Fest started yesterday; and there were quite a few wild costumes to look at.

As I said to Joy, you don’t have to cry for me (Argentina). What memories I have. And, truthfully, at my age I don’t need it. I was far happier in the national parks a couple of weeks ago. God is good to me.

Sorry to learn that going to concerts has come to an end. My last concert that I attended was in New Orleans to see Sir Paul McCartney do a concert to promote his "Off The Ground" compact disc in 1993.
