Is There a Hidden Tunnel?

St Margaret's Tunnel

Ever since I was a youngster, I had heard about the tunnel between St Margaret’s Church and the Queen’s Head Pub (the white building in the photo above), across the road. I thought that if it did exist then it was probably for a quick escape during times of religious persecution. As you can see in the photo above, it is not a great distance,so not much of an escape. I found a podcast where one of the shop owners, just down the street, was trying to find out if there really is a tunnel. I haven’t finished the podcast, but he did bring up a new theory about why there could be a tunnel, as well as fleeting mention of lizard people! It seems likely the Queen’s Head was once where the vestry stood, and instead of walking through the mud and muck, the vicar could use a tunnel to magically appear all clean and tidy. Sounds plausible. Of course, one needs to ruminate on these theories, so what better than with a pint of IPA. I had not heard of, let alone tried this one before, but very good it was.

It does sound possible. I mean we do have a chunnel between England and France. What else could there be?

@Fleura Didn't say it was. I'm just saying if something like that could be done, others like it and more could've been done, and only those who built them know.

I'd like to think so, but with road building and underground services, if there was one it was probably filled in.

I would love to think that there was one, but I fear it would be impossible to find it now.

@Ronrybs The council records were not accurate in the past. It would be exciting to discover the tunnel.

From the podcast, there is no record of a tunnel in the council records, but they could be lacking the information.

I will ask my daughter later when she wakes up. She was in London only for a year but she went on a puzzle hunt looking for tile clues about London. She succeeded in solving the puzzle and was recognized by the author of the puzzle book. Albeit your post sounds a bit scary. My daughter said there were places she didn't dare check because of some dark energy. 007 movies sometimes show tunnels...

@Ronrybs My daughter said your hunch about the hidden tunnel is most likely correct. With regards the dark energy, my daughter's fellow scholar narrated that he couldn't sleep well in his apartment because he had been hearing a strange noise coming from a closed room. Upon inquiry from others, he learned that somebody did die in the closed room and that it had always been haunted. One particular place my daughter did not check, if I recall right, is the Tower Bridge.

@eileenleyva Tower Bridge is an a great place to explore. You can walk along the structure over the road way. Excellent view!

There are lots of fascinating places in the city to explore. Haven't encountered any dark energy, myself, but there are some that are certainly on the unnerving side of things!

There can be more than one theories but the most often an escape route is more plausible.

Ye olde medieval streets. Windsor St, the one in the photo, is one way as two cars can barely pass side by side and is the oldest street in Uxbridge.

It is indeed, fine quality, Neck Oil. It is one of those things you'd love to be true, but with modern building, roads and underground pipes, if it did exist I suspect it is long gone

Never heard of Beavertown brewery before! And yes it does seem like a lot of unnecessary work to dig a tunnel for such a short distance. Surely there must be a simpler way to keep clean just crossing the road! And the religious persecution story doesn't sound plausible either. Let us know what you conclude!

I first heard this story in the 60s and if it hasn't been resolved by now, then I fear it is because it never existed... still, you never know. we'll have to see what we find! I had not heard of Beavertown, and I seldom drink IPA, but both were a good choice. Bit of a cheat, but the Queen's Head wasn't open when, so it was around to the Three Tuns, 30 seconds away, and the Neck Oil. Then it was a slow half in the Queen's.

The shop owner could well be right. I'm off to read more about it, I guess, judging by the title.

@Ronrybs Thanks for the link. I listened to it. Very interesting. I know our son in Ireland listens to a lot of podcasts when he is travelling.

@Ronrybs I found this from the trip we made to England in 1998. We met our son, Damian, at St Paul's and I quote from my journal. Went in a pub then had a drink and got talking to the owner. Had our photo taken behind the bar. He sent us off to another really old pub – Aqueduct Tavern – with 22 carat gold and silver decorated mirrors, the ceiling was stamped copper and underneath was an old cell but the publican couldn’t take us down as he was on his own. Beautiful barley-corn turned supports on bar. Had lunch here and a drink – very pleasant. So do you know the Aqueduct Tavern? I think it was on the way to where prisoners were executed.

Yes indeed, I have read there are miles of disused tunnels and stations under New York. I know there that is true for London and a lot of other cities, for sure!
