Fire in the Hole!

The other day I was taking a trip up Interstate 71 to see if there was any foliage to be seen. No, there wasn’t. I headed for home. As I prepared to get on the interstate I found the on ramp blocked by a construction pick-up truck. The guy approached my car. “Yes, sir?” “They’re blasting up the hill,” he explained. “Fire in the hole” is the expression used when dynamite is about to go off. He didn’t say that, but I heard the explosion — it was muffled, not one of those movie explosions — after about three minutes of waiting. After a minute he got the okay to release traffic, and we were back on the way. So those “blasting zone” signs are real. And it’s nice to know that they do take steps to make sure everyone is safe! Here’s a “fire in the hole” that’ll make NJ Chic sick :

I thought it said fire in Hotel, I was whoa that is exciting, then reread and said hole. Boring next. I make bad jokes. I do always find that neat how they blow up mountains to prevent rock slides and mud slides. Must be a fun job. What do you do blow mountains up. Cool, how much does it pay a lot. Can I get one no because everyone wants to do this.

Dynamiter. That’s one of those “you’d better be good at your job” jobs. “Fire in the hotel” is about the MGM Grand or the Winecoff Hotel. See, I can make bad jokes too!

@FourWalls Yeah I bet it is more stressful than people think especially for the guy directing it all. Plus how they have to block roads off with cranky people, just let me through, no, not till we done. Yeah sometimes you out bad joke me and it makes me laugh.

@crossbones27 — it’s a military thing. Don’t forget to go get yourself some free food on Veterans Day!

None at all. They had them “neatly piled” (as much as you can do that) in the median area that they’re destroying to make extra lanes for the interstate.

I am glad everyone is being kept safe. I guess a little bit of excitement is good.

@FourWalls Cool, that is awesome. I keep track of highways/freeways I have been on, although I have never traveled thorughout an entire highway start to finish. Now you have me thinking about my favorite highways.... Highway 89 in Arizona (might be a county road, not sure! Goes through Sedona, AZ) Highway 1 in Florida and Highway 70 across Denver And Highway 61 in Minnesota is a pretty highway, too (although I am biased) What are yours?

@maezee — wow, great question. Let’s see….in no exact order…. I love the drive down I-75, from about Richmond KY into Knoxville, TN. Especially in the fall. The Overseas Highway (US 1 in the Keys). Don’t know how anybody can not list that! The Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and North Carolina. US 90 along the Gulf Coast in Gulfport. I could drive that every day. I-24 west in Chattanooga, going around the bend of the Tennessee River. I got to see that earlier this year from the top of the Chattanooga National Battlefield, and it’s just as impressive up there. I’ve never driven the Pacific Coast Highway, but it’s in the opening credits of the Chevy Chase/Goldie Hawn movie Foul Play, and it’s stunning. Almost makes me think about going back to California to drive it. ALMOST, I said.

I-71 runs from Louisville (south) to Cleveland (north). I’ve been the entire length of that interstate. That, I-64 (Norfolk to St. Louis), and I-65 (Chicago to Mobile) are the only three I can say that about.

You've been all the way to Cleveland? Cool! You were about 40 miles from me. It's good that they stopped the traffic during the blasting.
