The old-fashioned broom is often depicted with the witch. It is believed it has its roots in a pagan fertility ritual. Farmers would leap onto such brooms and dance around in the light of a full moon to encourage the growth of their crops. Those who supposedly confessed to being witches in The Dark Ages also admitted to riding brooms to their sabbaths. Witches would use the broom in a sort of sympathetic magic showing the crops how high to grow. The witch is best known to wear black shapeless dresses or robes and cloaks but, they also wore green and brown. This was the color of the earth in which they worked so that it didn't show any stains if they had to interact with other people. The clothing was a bit of protection although many rituals are done in the nude or, as close to natural elements as possible. Image is courtesy of Adobe Stock-free images.

@celticeagle my niece took a course in college about alternative religions and actually attended coven meetings. I thought that was so interesting.

Interesting facts. Many superstitions come from the ancient Celt rituals.

@celticeagle Weird how some moved to the United States and are no more celebrated here in Europe, Halloween is an example.

Interesting to know. Witches in our Adivasi culture are only known to possess extraordinary powers but they don't fly on broomsticks or wear hats.
