Buttons, Buttons...

All of you sewers, do you have a button box? This was my Grandma's. She raised her children during the great depression, and had a difficult time making ends meet as did most people. She saved every button. When the clothing was worn out, she cut the buttons off and they went in this little basket. Over the years since it became mine, I have utilized this button collection many times. Some of them are funky and quirky. There are some shaped like animals, some big coat buttons, and there are even some old fashioned garters that ladies used to use to hold up their stockings. I have no use for the garters, but I leave them in there because...not sure why. Sentiment? Maybe. Every time I open this basket, I can hear her say ''Button, Button, who's got the buttons?''

Some of them bring back memories of certain things she wore. I love that.

@Danielclark691 I don't have many things of hers, but for some reason I just treasure this.

@MarieCoyle I don't know what happened to my grandmother's button box. I think it was a tin.

My mother used to have a button box when we were kids...It was fun to look at the buttons and you could play a game with a button n a string..That button game was cool.

Yes, it was. We found simple ways to play and amuse ourselves without video games. Amazing, isn't it?

I think my mom might have. I think we only tossed out buttons when we could no longer sew them back on.

I was the only sewer of the grandchildren, so her sewing items went to me. Yes, she taught us to only toss them if they couldn't be used anymore.

I love your grandma's button box. I have one, but I don't remember the last time I used a button from it.

@MarieCoyle That kind of approach is something I just can't imagine. Obviously those people have far more money than sense.

I actually know a couple of people who throw garments away if they lose a button. I can't even imagine this. Yes, it's a treasure.

That button collection looks uncannily like mine! But those garter fasteners - don't know what the proper name for them is but surely they are just the same as the ones that hold up nylon stockings nowadays?

They no doubt came from a garter belt, that held up silk stockings at some point in the past.
