I like the sound of Gingin gin

Ron Rybs (@RonRybs) wrote recently about the Viaduct Tavern in London. It is a gin palace and it seems gin palaces are on the rise. The making of gin is also increasing in Australia. In Western Australia, many town names end in ‘-gin’ which is supposed to mean ‘place of water’ in the aboriginal language. This caught the imagination of distiller Greg Garnish who set out to create speciality gins named in the honour of seven towns. The towns are Narrogin (which is our home town), Dangin, Wagin, Corrigin, Muntadgin, Badgingarra and Gingin. The series is called the Outback Gin Series and celebrates the floral diversity of the greater wheatbelt region which has about 7500 different species of plants that are not found anywhere else in the world. Greg from Wise Wines travelled 4,500 kms and collected about 70 different botanicals and distilling each individually. He chose a plant unique to each location and made a gin from it. As picking native plants from bush areas is illegal, the botanicals were all sourced from private farms. While most distilleries use grain to create their spirit, Greg chose to use wine as the base. After distilling twice to get to a pisco (whatever that is), the botanicals are put into the still. Juniper and range of other flavours are added. I like the sound of Gingin gin, don’t you? And perhaps Anna (@LadyDuck) or anyone else can enlighten me as to what pisco is. The photo is of my parents' old shed in Narrogin.

Pisco is a pale yellow brandy produced in Perù, we used to buy it but I cannot find it anymore. We have Swiss Gin produced up in the mountain villages, I did not buy because of the price, no way that I spend more than $50 for a bottle of gin.

I used to soak golden raisins in gin. It was supposed to ward off arthritis but then I couldn't find golden raisins anymore.

@LadyDuck Please do! We have ordinary raisins here but not golden ones. I don't know they need to be 'golden'. I used to be able to get them. They were a lighter colour than the standard ones.

Apparently he is doing something similar in the north of the state although there aren't so many towns up there with 'gin' in their name.

I like the sound of it. But surely if it isn't made from a spirit-based grain it isn't a gin? I think it would be a type of brandy.

@DocAndersen I don't mind a gin and tonic - or is that how it always gets drunk?

I was advised to soak golden raisins in gin and have a couple of spoonsful each day as an arthritis preventative.

They only made a limited number of bottles and I think they have all sold out now. He was going to do the same in the more northern regions.

Those old sheds had so much character. The uprights were tree trunks chosen because they had the right type of fork at the top.

Far too many gins out there! I stopped drinking gin and other shorts many years ago. I do enjoy slowly drinking a pint

@JudyEv Yes, I remember the sudden sprouting of craft breweries. Some still survive and very good they are too!

I love the picture and the ginger gin story. Here is what Wikipedia has to say: "Pisco is a colorless or yellowish-to-amber colored brandy produced in winemaking regions of Peru and Chile. Made by distilling fermented grape juice into a high-proof spirit..."
