White Bread

When I was growing up we ate Holsum white bread. If there was none in the grocery store then my mom's alternative brand was Wonder white bread. White bread. Guess my mom didn't know we should have been eating whole wheat brown bread, I left my hometown (Miami, Florida) at the end of 1986. I have never returned, not even for a visit. I have shopped at grocery stores in lots of US cities since them. I don't know why but the thought popped into my head that I have never seen the bread brands that I used to eat as a child on the grocery store shelf. No Holsum. No Wonder Bread. What about you? Is there a particular brand of anything that you grew up with, but now you don't see anymore?

White bread, white potatoes, white rice. These were staples of my relatives. All of them lived well into their 90's. Well, how do you like that? As far as brands are concerned, I don't see some of the ones that were around years ago. What I also noticed is that I can't find the smaller loaves of sandwich bread. When I was single, I used to get a loaf called Kew Bee. That wasn't the brand name, it was the size of the loaf. It was great because it was just enough for me and I didn't have to worry about storing any extra in the freezer.

Well that is something that I noticed at the grocery store. Some of the loaves are smaller sized.

@cmoneyspinner Sometimes smaller is more convenient depending on the circumstances.

We don't eat the gummy white bread anymore. My favorite is 12-grain bread.

We ate white bread back in the day too. Now we buy multi-grain of some sort.

I had heard of Wonder bread, but can't recall what we bought when I was a youngster living in Chicago. I find white bread to be pretty tasteless, so I stick to wholemeal loafs, unless I am making toast, then it has to be thick, white with lashings of butter and jam!

Speaking of think when I loved to Texas I realized there was something called Texas toast. The bread slice were extra think. If you go to Whataburger you can get your hamburger on Texas toast instead of a hamburger bun.

We always had homemade bread growing up. Mom always cooked bread. We never had store bought bread. They do have Wonder Bread here though. I buy it now.

Holsom Bread was bought out. I forget who bought them out but remember because we had a bakery in Baton Rouge where I lived growing up. It was always heaven driving by the bakery with bread baking!

There was a bakery near the university I attended. The smell coming out of that bakery was awesome!

I honestly never remember eating plain white Wonder style bread, at least not hardly unless it was a school lunch, and I usually took my lunch. Grandma made our bread, and later on, I learned and did that. My kids always had homemade bread, usually whole wheat with a touch of honey.

There is nothing like homemade bread. I always wondered why store-bought bread did not taste the same. It's probably cause homemade bread is made with love and a touch of honey.

@cmoneyspinner Made in massive amounts by big machinery. I honestly don't care for the Wonder-Bread type of bread. I like some texture and flavor, and it just sort of tastes like, well, nothing at all.

I'm trying to remember, it seems that in the past we rarely eat packaged products, everything is taken directly from nature, we have a garden that grows rice, corn, fruits, vegetables. There are also chicken farms, ducks, fish ponds. All is enough to just eat.

WHOA! That must have been nice. I do remember we had fruit trees in our yard, mango, coconut, Chinese plum and a cherry bush. My next door neighbor had a banana tree, Some of my neighbors had an avocado tree. My mom did not grow vegetable. Instead she went to the farm and picked them in the field. Back then, the farmers allowed that. I don't think they do that any more.

Same here, but I haven't done shopping inside a store for several years now. Oh, I remember mom sending me to the corner store for a loaf of bread and smelling it on top of the bag all the way home. It was heavenly (the smell) and made me hungry just to eat a slice.
