Short story: Unhappiness was not who John really was

Johns psychologist was always happy, and he always had a smile on his dial

John had gone for an appointment to his psychologist, Alfred Gorfton, because he was feeling rather down, depressed, and just unhappy about the way that his life was currently panning itself out. Alfred looked at John, with his piercing eyes, as he said to John: "You know John, happiness is your natural state, so why are you not always happy?" "And so, this means that we don't need a reason to be happy, because happiness is our natural state." "But, oppositely so, we do need a reason to be unhappy, as unhappiness is not our natural state." "What is your reason to be unhappy, John?" Alfred asked of John. "Think about this statement of truth now then." "Everything out of your control is always under God's control." "Have you heard of the Serenity prayer, which goes something like this:" "God grant me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change; the courage to change the things that I can; and the wisdom to always know the difference." The spiritual teacher Eckart Tolle, says this about unhappiness:" "The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but your thoughts about it." "Now, we might easily accept, and believe what he has said here, as it does sound rather plausible, but are we our thoughts alone?" "Now, thoughts lead to thinking. Thinking creates a colour to your experiences, and so feelings other than happiness are created then, by our seeing these one-dimensional colours, all segregated out all alone. We see the colours of boredom, depression, insecurity, unhappiness, solely because of the way that we think, then." "But, I more say that actually there are no causes for both unhappiness, nor happiness." "Happiness is always there, as it is the meat of life, but when you do not like that meat, you become a vegetarian, and so then you need to find happiness again, all over again, and you think that you are unhappy in the interim, and must look for it, or for something or other to create it for you again, once more again, in your life." "Nothing has been lost though, as we are still happy underneath all else." " Happiness is the natural state of who we all are." " Acceptance of life, exactly as it is, is the only real happiness." "Your quality of life comes from your ability to see love in all things, and then your doing what is pretty much the loving thing of being yourself without regret, or without the unhappiness, of non-acceptance." "Think over these things until our next session John." Albert said. "This session is now finished, and I must prepare myself for my next client, due in five minutes from now." Nice lesson that happiness is when we find the wonders of God's creation and see the good side of life.

Yes, seeing the good in life, and seeing that it is usually ourselves that move ourselves away from this good side of life, allows us to see that the good side of life, is actually God's side of life for us too, and then, as you said, we really can see then the true wonders of God's creation, in ourselves, and in all other things created too.

everything out of your control, those types of things make me nervous. In the universe of free will, that really would never apply.

I was not meaning that everything is out of our control. I see it more like this. God creates us as a seed of potential, out of love, peace, innate knowing, natural happiness inbuilt too, etc. It is then up to us what we do with our seed. Leave it on the shelf, put it in good soil, water it, protect it against birds etc. The initial seed is a given, freedom starts after that. Or, we could look at it like this. We can run the inbuilt programs, or we can replace them with our own. That's our freedom of choice.

@innertalks but then there is no free will. there is only an extended play version of God's Greatest hits.

Well, if we think about it, and about how God created us all from his love, how could happiness, not be a part of our natural state, then too?

Maybe, some make an effort to be unhappy and wallow in it to spread it far and wide! It is a conscious choice to look out for those that are negative, losers, out to blame others for their own perverted thinking. There is always a gap between our wants and needs. Needs can be fulfilled but wants can be sky-high and hence unmet. We need to tone down the wants to the reality of life here. It happens when our needs are met we jump to those that make us unhappy. Meeting our needs is fulfilling but our wants keep expanding and soon out of our grasp. A life of thankfulness and gratitude overlapped by love in everything we see and do is the panacea - a simple cure for an eternal issue otherwise.

Mostly our needs are illusionary though, only needs of our body, and mind. Our higher self has no other needs, other than love, and of knowing God. Its purpose is to bring this knowing of God to others too, via giving out love to others too, in the most helping/helpful of ways.

@Shiva49 Yes, you are more practical-minded than me. I sort of would like to believe that if we can live fully from our lofty spiritual position from only love, the rest of the stuff sitting below this position, should really just take care of itself. Perhaps, the world does not yet work that way though, and too many chiefs, sitting loftily high up on the mountain, would mean that there were no workers to work the fields below to supply necessities such as food and houses, etc. etc. to the needy.

@innertalks Yes, but we need to meet the needs and yearnings of our family too that are more related to a decent lifestyle here - so our pursuit of the higher self can be brought down to earth, tempered, often

Happiness is a by-product of our attitude. Happiness lies in ourselves not in material things.

I think that happiness naturally exists in our hearts, but to exist in our minds too, it does depend on our attitude, so l agree with you there.
