Made a big mistake

I pay all my mom's bills for her through her bank's bill pay option that I set up for her. I logged on today to pay her cell phone bill and noticed that my last payment for the water bill for their house has been made in August when I paid it in mid-November. I went to the online DEP account to check and turns out that I accidentally made this payment for the house where we live (her old house). Good thing I caught that because the water bill for her house was due December 10th. I quickly made a payment for her house's water bill so all should be well. The water account for our house now has a negative balance of about $116. I know that it will be used toward our next water bill and we'll just have to pay the difference, however, it was about $116 spent for no reason. Now I wonder if I made any other mistakes like this for other bills. Having to deal with two houses worth of bills, plus other bills, is a lot to keep up with...

I can understand that. I am sure the mistake, while costly, will benifit you in the long run, because you'll be paying less.

That's true. Next bill my mom won't have to pay much once that payment is deducted. But the frustrating thing is that I double checked to see if I was paying the correct bill and didn't catch the mistake.

You are so right, when this Swiss house was our vacation home, it was stressful to have to manage the bills for two houses.

@lovebuglena I am very careful when I pay, it never happened to me, but it was stressful to double check everything, also considering that our apartment was in one country and the house in another country, with two different currencies.

I never really make mistakes like this. I may have done it once before but I caught it right away.

I wonder if they could've transferred that payment to the other account...

I am, and that I caught it before the due date. However, I am not happy that my mom’s bank account was deducted $116 because of my mistake. I haven’t even told her about it.

We no longer have to worry about the other house; and I'm glad that stress and financial burden are gone! I hope you paid the rest of the bills OK.
