Animal Testing

Sorry to be posting another somber Discussion; but animal testing has been on my mind a lot these days. I remember back in the 60s hearing and seeing rabbits put in an enclosure so that they couldn't move and having things like hairspray sprayed into their eyes. I am always appalled at practices such as this, especially when it involves monkeys, dogs or any other intelligent animals. My husband disagrees with me and says that it's necessary to test out new drugs or practices on animals; but that's what clinical trials are for. I applaud those cosmetic companies that advertise that they don't use animal testing. How do you feel about it? Is animal testing necessary? Is it humane? Photo Credit: Pixabay

I feel as you do. I know scientists at Yale who work with mice and rats only for testing. That doesn’t bother me too much.

I may be OK with it for medical research. But the cosmetics industry can survive without maiming and killing animals.

I don't care for the use of any animal. They all can feel pain.

I'm on the fence about this. We need new advances in medicine. We don't NEED new advances in cosmetics. Even rats can be pets. Where do we draw the line?

It definitely is a subject for discussion.

I like the idea of drawing a line. Like it should be done only and only if it's super necessary. Nice thinking.

Some of the things they have done have been necessary, but most are totally stupid. What did the public school system gain by making me dissect an earthworm in 7th grade (other than something the janitor had to clean up)?

We had to dissect frogs. I never saw the necessity except to make us smell like chloroform.

No, it is not necessary, it is cruel and it must be stopped. I am against animal testing.

@lindaohio It’s obviously wrong, especially for cosmetics.

@LindaOHio It’ll never go away of course. People will always be able to justify animal cruelty in order to get what they have to have, and they’ll believe whatever lies industry invents to help their consciences.

@xFiacre I always thought that I'd like to work in a lab; but I could NEVER do any testing on animals.

i grew up in the house of a scientist, he used to complain about animal testing. Dogs, rabbits and other non-primates have different reactions than humans so he would say waste of time. I think there has to be better ways.

That is very interesting - thank you for sharing. We all assume that testing is necessary - maybe its not, or if its done, it has little benefit?

@DocAndersen I didn't know that about the different reactions; but that would make sense.

@LindaOHio it is why NASA and others used specific monkeys that are very similar to humans.

I don’t like the idea of inflicting pain or suffering- but there’s the question of will it help save lives? I wonder, if it is deemed absolutely necessary (not for cosmetic use) could the testing be done without any discomfort at least?

You would think animals have no feelings and do not suffer, It is not humane and when one of the outside cats here named Silky comes to visit she looks at me with so much love, I kiss the top of her head and she meows, Such a darling cat anyone would hurt her they could be sure to hear from me,

They shouldn't do this to animals, unless maybe it's for medical research.

I thought about this and I couldn't find the answer. Like should we test on humans ? Can we ask humans if they want to volunteer ? What if we pay them for volunteering ? Maybe we'll be pushing the poors to have tests done on them.. I truly don't know

Here in the United States we pay people to take certain medications, etc.. They are called clinical trials.
