I got my chance!

A few months ago I wrote about how, in my first job, the supervisor took against me and used to make me clean the toilets at every opportunity. It got to the point where other staff would basically be waiting for him to tell me to do it. I regarded it all as a bit of a joke but obviously the resentment at my unfair treatment stuck in my mind. I thought that if I ever saw him again (he now lives in France) I would tell him that toilets always made me think of him. Well today, somewhat surprisingly, I got that chance! My Uncle died a few weeks ago and today a memorial service was held for him. Along with his daughters and their families and various more distant relatives, in-laws and neighbours, Alan was there. I wondered whether I should just let things go but decided that no, I would regret it if I missed the opportunity to let him know I hadn’t forgotten. So when he said ‘It’s Alan, do you remember me?’ I said ‘Oh yes of course I do, I think of you every time I clean a toilet!’ He looked a bit non-plussed so I continued ‘Do you remember the Little Chef? You used to make me clean the toilets all the time.’ He did have the good grace to look a bit shame-faced at that. Maybe it was petty but I was glad I was able to let him know I still remembered. And just being able to tell him freed me from that festering resentment and we went on to have a nice chat. So an unexpected bonus on a sad occasion. @TheHorse just made me think of this. A long time ago, when I was still at school, I had a ‘Saturday job’ at a restaurant called ‘Little Chef’ - remember them...

I wonder why he behaved like this ? I will be back on this post reading old post... I don't see any point where a close friend of cousin doing this - Can you confirm your relation with your cousin ? And how was his relation with your cousin ? And how was his relation with other staff members ? Answer to all these questions are clean and positive then I guess his boss was forcing him to do it. Or he himself is not a good person. If I keep myself in his shoe then I would have segregated it in such a way that everyone gets to do all the things. And not single person suffer. By the way -- I liked this statement you made on other discussion - " I wanted to do things properly rather than in a slap-dash manner - but I was very reliable and I was happy to show up at short notice" very rare people has such thinking, I am sure you did great in coming years with such attitude

Oh thank you! Yes I never really understood why he behaved that way. He was good friends with my cousin and also with her family, which was presumably why he came to the service today. With other staff he was also a bit 'bossy' but the toilet-cleaning duties he saved for me, it was a bit of a joke among the staff.

@Fleura Why didn't you cross-questioned him at that time ? Oh wait I am extremely sorry!!!! I missed your one statement in the post. And I am really sorry for your loss. May his Soul Rest in Peace. ( I usually avoid writing or respond to such discussions. As I usually don't know how to respond in such cases ) May god give strength to his Family to overcome the loss.

Good for you. As you say, I think you would have regretted not saying something.

@Fleura Nice that he was a little embarrassed but you were then able to have a chat.

@JudyEv If I hadn't known him before, I would have thought what a pleasant person he was! Perhaps he has mellowed with age.

That's wonderful you were able to do that and clear your mind. Getting that off your chest I am sure was a big help.

It seems very petty but I knew if I said nothing I would be annoyed at myself for ever after! Now as you say I feel it has cleared my mind.

@Fleura There are things we cannot forget, I would also like to meet someone and tell her how rude she had been in the past... I will meet her one day!
