We all know the story of Rosa Parks, right? Well did you know that Rosa and her husband, Raymond, were civil rights activists long before Rosa became famous for her refusal to give up her seat on a city bus on December 1, 1955. This act is what started the Montgomery bus boycott where the black residents of Montgomery, Alabama boycotted city buses for 381 days. But Rosa had become a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP) in 1943. Time magazine named Rosa one of the 20 most influential figures of the 20th century. But, did you know that another young woman had actually been the first to do this same thing? A 15-year-old woman named Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat to a white woman on March 2, 1955.

I have read about Rosa Parks and her revolutionary action. I was not aware that she was a civil rights activist much before that. Never heard if Claudette Colvin. There are many such unsung heroes in history.

@celticeagle Thanks for sharing. We should share with others whenever we come to know of such heroes. People need to know about them and get inspired.

That’s the way it is, I guess. The people with the better press agents get the glory. It’s like Jackie Robinson, everyone talks about him “breaking the color barrier” in baseball. That’s true, I guess….if you discount Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1880……
