RasmaSandra (@RasmaSandra) wrote recently about the arrival of a new baby giraffe.
In September and October, Perth Zoo in Western Australia welcomed two new little giraffes into the world and there is a very cute YouTube clip of them playing in their enclosure. Although it’s lovely to see them, it’s a shame they don’t have a bit more room to stretch out.
I’ll be looking forward to seeing them when the weather cools down a bit and we can visit the zoo.
The photo was taken some years ago in the Monarto Safari Park, on open-range zoo in South Australia.
@Perth Zoo’s two giraffe calves are now out and about together, much to the delight of Zoo guests. This is the first time Perth Zoo has had two giraffe calves...

@ElicBxn I remembered what fondness you have for these critters.

I love giraffes. I got to see one born (live and in person, not on a web cam) at the St. Louis Zoo.

@JudyEv — I think it was a little bit of a surprise. They said that giraffes can be in labor for a day or two, but she just plopped that baby right on out. AND it stood up. All before closing time. And this was out in the open. They had the dad locked up, not the mom.

@FourWalls The moms give birth standing up. If you hit the ground from that height, you wouldn't need a slap on the bottom, that's for sure.

@kobesbuddy It doesn't take them too long though, does it? Baby goats start playing almost as soon as they're dry.

@aninditasen Out in the open air at a zoo should be okay and I could wear my mask. But I really can't see myself going at the moment.

I LOVE giraffes. I always hate to see them out of their natural habitat though. I know the zoos are keeping species from becoming extinct; but I still mourn for the loss of their natural homes.

@LindaOHio Me either but they do. And lots of others. They are slowly wiping out many species.

They looked pretty relaxed. "Home, Home On The Range." No deer but I guess the giraffes can play with the antelope in the photo.

@dgobucks226 I guess it's both. Giraffes have an extra-large heart too and valves in the neck to help the blood get all the way to the head. Very interesting creatures.

Agreed! Fun fact: I read Giraffes require very little water each day? And here I thought it was Camels
