Little giraffes stretch their legs

RasmaSandra (@RasmaSandra) wrote recently about the arrival of a new baby giraffe. In September and October, Perth Zoo in Western Australia welcomed two new little giraffes into the world and there is a very cute YouTube clip of them playing in their enclosure. Although it’s lovely to see them, it’s a shame they don’t have a bit more room to stretch out. I’ll be looking forward to seeing them when the weather cools down a bit and we can visit the zoo. The photo was taken some years ago in the Monarto Safari Park, on open-range zoo in South Australia.
@Perth Zoo’s two giraffe calves are now out and about together, much to the delight of Zoo guests. This is the first time Perth Zoo has had two giraffe calves...

That's a great photo. Different varieties of giraffes have different coat patterns which I find fascinating.

@ElicBxn They are beautiful animals too. It's just awful that so many species are slowly becoming extinct.

It was nice to see them 'au naturel' with acres to roam in. There were lions, spotted deer, bison and lots of others all in separate paddocks.

I love giraffes. I got to see one born (live and in person, not on a web cam) at the St. Louis Zoo.

@JudyEv — I think it was a little bit of a surprise. They said that giraffes can be in labor for a day or two, but she just plopped that baby right on out. AND it stood up. All before closing time. And this was out in the open. They had the dad locked up, not the mom.

@FourWalls The moms give birth standing up. If you hit the ground from that height, you wouldn't need a slap on the bottom, that's for sure.

That would have been pretty special. It's a wonder they let the public anywhere near - or weren't you 'public'?

They are cute and yes, they need to learn to use those long legs and develop their muscles.

@kobesbuddy It doesn't take them too long though, does it? Baby goats start playing almost as soon as they're dry.

@RubyHawk Perhaps they're being paid by the authorities to put on a good show for the tourists.

@aninditasen Out in the open air at a zoo should be okay and I could wear my mask. But I really can't see myself going at the moment.

Baby giraffes are so cute. We have a safari park in Winston Oregon. It's about 1 1/2 hrs from me. It has a lot of neat animals with room to roam.

I guess that is one of the problems with zoos, not enough room to live a natural life. On the other hand, they are much safer

Zoos are much better than they used to be. At least, the Perth one is. Some that we saw in Europe were pretty ordinary.

When you see them galloping, they're basically going from one end to the other - that's on the YouTube clip. They could do with a bit more room really.

@dgobucks226 I guess it's both. Giraffes have an extra-large heart too and valves in the neck to help the blood get all the way to the head. Very interesting creatures.
