Short story: The urge, of the itch

The smoking addiction can be overcome with prayer, and love.

Horace Argyle always strongly felt an urge to have another cigarette. It was like the urge was an itch in his mind that only smoking another cigarette could relieve. Horace wanted to know what causes such an itch, which urges us to succumb to its wants, and so itch it, with a bad habit, such as smoking, undoubtedly was. He went along to see a psychotherapist, to ask him about how he could overcome such a compulsion. The renowned doctor, Eric (EE) Ericstine, told him to do this. "The urge for the itch to be itched comes from a feeling of wanting, wanting to be felt, which then causes the itch in your mind, as an urge that builds, and builds, until you give into it." "Get rid of the feeding feeling, and the itch will go too, along with its attached urge." "Move into your heart, and do something with love, and the other feeling will be replaced." "A prayer will help you to so move there, into your heart, my man," he said. "Love trumps all other feelings, with itself, every time." "On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with some urges, that are within us." "We have an inbuilt yearning placed within our hearts, with which, we can satisfy the itches within us looking for truth, meaning, and God." "This yearning is a genuine one, if we remain in its humility side, and feel it coming to us from our hearts of love, but when we connect the yearning, through our minds, to our ego instead, we develop wants for all that is in the world, including a greed for truth too." "We then become huffers and puffers, ego inflated to the extreme, instead of remaining humble vessels of love." "Love never itches, but soothes all itches, and yet it also urges you to embrace itself with itself in you." "Love is always pleasantly felt, and any urgent itch, or compulsive urge, does not ever come to you from love." "Now, you might say that smoking gives you pleasure, but the fact that you are here asking me for help to overcome its addiction in you, shows you plainly that this is a false pleasure, more a lusting after some type of a feeling instead, not real joy, as comes to you from love." "Ok, I have scheduled you in for another session, next week." "Please try to remember to pray every time that an urge to smoke comes into you." "This method will indeed work, my friend. It is after all the same method that I also used to overcome my own smoking problem, and I have not touched a cigarette now, for well over thirty years. I was a heavy two pack a day man too." @DocAndersen Yes, and unless, we are the ones to draw that line, for ourselves, we will always be guessing about it. Most of our problems stem from expectations/wrong assertions/calculations of where we think that that line might actually be. Maybe, the line is a moving line, and that might mess up all of our plans then too.

@innertalks that is the essence of the struggle is it not? To know where the line is drawn?

@innertalks that is the essence of the chase isn't it, where to draw that line.

I absolutely agree that anything can be overcome with love and prayer, When I say my morning prayer I always add-in for the Lord to help me through the rough spots but that I will help myself as well and then of course after the day is over I give thanks and say The Lord:s Prayer,

That's good to say both morning, and evening prayers. As in this story, we can also pray whenever we feel the need to pray, at any other time of the day, and night too. My wife had a dream last night that our house was burgled, and yet we slept right through it. She also said a prayer when she woke up from that nightmare, to thank God that it wasn't true.

Thanks, for commenting here too. Yes, I have always felt that prayer and love, can get us through almost anything, and it probably is everything too, as there is nothing that enough heartfelt prayer, and love, cannot overcome, as you just said too.

Ditching the itch through love and prayer is the way and, of course, through strong willpower, to start with, to make the change happen. In a way, money addiction can be controlled also through prayer and love when it becomes overwhelming. One should make a conscious effort and make wise choices.

Willpower, being of the mind, is never quite strong enough, if it is not also attached to the passion of love in our hearts. Here, Horace could not stop smoking using his willpower alone. He had already tried, many times over, with little success, using his willpower alone. He was at his wit's end, which is why he went to someone else for help. Even making a conscious effort is not enough sometimes either. Why doesn't making a conscious effort work for us sometimes? Mankind thinks that consciousness is the Holy grail of life, whereas the truth is, it is merely the laces on the shoes of love, and laces alone can do nothing, but need to be laced to the shoes of love to move you anywhere in life.

@Shiva49 Yes, willpower, is the way for us to play our own active part in our lives, but I do not think that God allows love to otherwise stay in the background for us all, at all times. Sometimes, love emerges from its background, unexpectedly so, on its own, to bite us on the foot, or to peck us on the cheek with itself too. When out in nature, this can happen more frequently for us too. We see God's love in the birds flying past, in the steadfastness of a tree, or in a beautiful sunset, or sunrise.

@innertalks Willpower will help us take our eyes off the glitter of all that shines in this material world. That will show us the right path towards love putting it ahead of the cart that lugs our whole being here. Love will then come to the fore and then we are well on our way to soaring high. Otherwise, love will stay unobtrusively in the background playing not even a second fiddle or none at all even.
