Blessing the Waters on a cold day.

Greece
January 6, 2022 12:45pm CST
Thursday is our weekly shopping day and the town is usually very busy, however the first supermarket we passed was closed. That was a surprise. We drove on and saw that all shops but the coffee shops were closed too. As we drove through the town we realised why everywhere was closed. It was the day when the priests bless the waters. Sure enough down by the sea a crowd had gathered waiting for the priests to arrive and throw a cross into the sea. Men who must be very keen, then dive in and race to become the first person to retrieve the cross. The winner gets a blessing for his efforts. This is not my background so it seemed rather a strange thing to participate in on a cold morning in January, but it happens every year. We just forgot and had a wasted journey. So tomorrow we will make a second early start hoping that life in town has returned to normal.

Our brass band used to play for the Blessing of the Fleet in the port of Fremantle. There would be a church service then a street parade followed by the fishing boats charging round the harbour once or twice then everyone going back to the church hall for refreshments.

That tradition sounds substantial in every way!

@41CombedaleRoad Most of the fishing population were Italian and would dress up really well for the occasion. It was a very big day for them.

That seems... odd... Why do they do that?

The priests deliver a blessing on the one who reaches the cross first. That's why they do it. The priest ties a rope to the cross just to make sure he gets it back! It is odd. It is just some old tradition that was dreamed up in the past. I haven't studied the history of it but I do know it is not something they got from the Bible.

That is the strangest, or one of the strangest tradations I've heard of. Good luck tomorrow. If this is a one day event, tomorrow should be back to normal.

I thought the water looked in need of a blessing! I couldn't find anything suitable so I used my own photo.
