Halfway through this countdown of favorites with “star” in the title, and I must give a shoutout to @RasmaSandra for suggesting the theme! Just to prove this is really me and not a hack, here’s today’s song, which doesn’t go with yesterday’s song at all. #6: Dark Star - Crosby, Stills, and Nash No relation to the Grateful Dead “Dark Star” (except in sharing a title). While their first album is considered a staple of classic rock, it is the second Crosby, Stills, and Nash album that holds that special place in my heart. Maybe because I had a lot of time to listen to music at the time, and it was so prevalent on FM rock radio with all the other “sensitive singer/songwriters” that I loved back then. You see, kiddies, back then in the old days, when the DJ said, “Coming up, we have a set with Jackson Browne, Led Zeppelin, Leon Redbone, Joan Armatrading, Little Feat, and CSN,” you couldn’t automatically guess what songs they were going to play. (And yes, Redbone, Armatrading, and Little Feat used to get played on FM rock stations.) The CSN song could have as easily been this one or “Cathedral” (which Graham Nash described as “about my favorite acid trip”) as “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.” Now? They say CSN and you know what’s coming. But I digress. This song takes me back to a lot of good memories of living in Daytona Beach, and the music was a significant part of those good memories. So enjoy this good memory of mine. Dark Star Written by Stephen Stills Recorded by Crosby, Stills, and Nash From CSN, 1977 Ain’t this song a bust:

I was one when this came out, not bad, nice mellowness to it. My friends will play this type of music to calm me down. See I am easy, just have to know how to handle me.

Stills could write some great songs! From Buffalo Springfield to the ahead of its time 1st Manassas double LP, his songwriting and production skills in the studio was paramount to molding that CS&N sound.

I look at the CSN canon and realize he wrote a lot of my top five: “Southern Cross,” “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “I Give, You Give Blind,” and “Shadow Captain.”

@dgobucks226 — and let’s face it, Stephen isn’t a slouch at guitar himself, so to pull that off is quite impressive!

@FourWalls His contributions were impressive. Crosby & Nash seem to bring out his best! And when you can get both Hendrix and Clapton to play on your first solo album (a Gold Record), and the only artist ever to do so, you must be doing something right
