I don't hate the song (hard to dismiss it when it reached #1) but definitely not on the "top of my list" of must listen to Hall and Oates tunes. Funny, how the duo's blue-eyed soul style morphed into pop? I don't know if you call that talent or a selling out? Perhaps a bit of both!

I think it was the 80s syndrome. There were a lot of acts I liked in the 70s that I couldn’t stand to listen to in the 80s: Hall & Oates, Chicago, and REO Speedwagon top the list. I’ve heard a lot of Heart fans say they got bad in the 80s too, but I never was much on them to begin with (don’t deny their importance, though, just not my cup of tea).

@FourWalls You make a good point there! I go along with that reasoning. Having to adjust their musical style to stay on the charts, remain relevant, and appeal to what's currently popular. Plus, they need to pay for their extravagant lifestyles.
