A photo isn't always what it seems

While recently in Bunbury, Western Australia, we had a bit of time to kill and drove to a lookout which ‘looks out’ over the southernmost mangrove swamps in the world. Most of Australia’s mangrove swamps are on the north and east coasts. Less than 1% of our total forest area is mangrove forest and 17% of that is in Western Australia. Mangrove areas play a role in protecting coastal areas from erosion, storm surges and tsunamis. They build their own environment by allowing sediment to build up by retarding the tidal flower of water. The Bunbury mangrove swamp has a boardwalk and viewing platforms so you can walk through the mangroves and watch for the water-birds that frequent the area. On this visit, we chose to view the area from a higher vantage point.

Really kooool shot of the swamp ..... I'm trying to figure out where all the water is. Mind you I live in the desert so am not that sure what to expect.

You can walk through on the boardwalk but if you stepped off the walk, you'd probably be ankle-knee deep in squishy mud.

I've never been near a marsh and the only time I've ever seen one is in pictures or videos so I haven't a clue how deep a marsh would get.

Mangrove swamp is a term I have heard but didn't know exactly what they were. Thanks for teaching me something new today

That is a pretty view. I think I’d definitely like this higher view then the lower one in the photo. You probably can’t see the water from the lower path in the photo like you can from the higher point.

That's true. It's pretty 'ordinary' from ground level.

Glad you like the photo. The mangroves don't really look anything special from the road.

It's surprising what well kept secrets there are around the place. Well, they're not really secrets but I'm sure you know what I mean.

A muddy swamp doesn't sound that enticing. Only now are people really appreciating their important in protecting the shore.

Every different type of environment has its role to play in the bigger picture.

Apparently there are a number of different species depending on the area, climate, etc.
