While recently in Bunbury, Western Australia, we had a bit of time to kill and drove to a lookout which ‘looks out’
over the southernmost mangrove swamps in the world. Most of Australia’s mangrove swamps are on the north and east coasts. Less than 1% of our total forest area is mangrove forest and 17% of that is in Western Australia.
Mangrove areas play a role in protecting coastal areas from erosion, storm surges and tsunamis. They build their own environment by allowing sediment to build up by retarding the tidal flower of water.
The Bunbury mangrove swamp has a boardwalk and viewing platforms so you can walk through the mangroves and watch for the water-birds that frequent the area. On this visit, we chose to view the area from a higher vantage point.
