Twos-Day on a Wednesday

Two playful cats to represent Twos-day, so-called because the short-hand for the date is 2/2/22. I started my students off with a fun handout to complete based on multiplying by 2. There were several activities on the handout and some required the students to think over very carefully how to represent multiplication by 2 to solve the activity. The students seemed to enjoy completing the puzzles. Today's math lesson on comparing fractions with unlike denominators wasn't as big a hit. We had been building up to it by studying equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. Most recently, we compared fractions with like denominators. I assured the kids that they already possessed the knowledge they needed to accomplish today's objective because they understood how to calculate equivalent fractions and how to compare fractions with like denominators. All they needed to do was combine the two skills to complete today's exercises. Most of them picked up on it right away. A few struggled at first but got the hang of it after a few practice problems. There were a couple of students who chose not to pay attention to the lesson and didn't get it at all. Their parents have been contacted about their choice. The rest of the day went as well as could be expected. Wednesday is my "long" day with the kids as they only have one special (aka assigned elective - yes, I know it's an oxymoron) and it comes during the last 30 minutes of the day. On all the other days, the students and I have 2 or 3 breaks from one another when they are with the specials teachers. Now, I am home, have been out to play with the dogs, and am ensconced in my recliner watching Father Brown, a British detective show.

I remember enjoying math ..... most of the time that is. Of course back in the 1960s teachers did things very differently.

Technology and children's attention spans were a lot different when we were growing up.

Yes they were. It amazes me how smart some 5 year olds these days are, I can't remember being very smart at that age.

@rebelann When I listen to what my fourth graders talk about and the vocabulary they use, I feel the same way you do. I don't remember knowing what they know when I was their age.

When I felt the call to leave my business career and enter the classroom, I tried to take all the best traits of my best teachers and did my best not to be like the teachers who once made me hate school.

We get Father Brown here too. It's not a bad show but we don't watch much TV at all.

A day well-spent with your students, You must be a competent teacher. I have had trouble explaining mixed, improper and proper fractions to my grandkid because I have forgotten all about it. I had to re-learned it for a few minutes before I could tutor her. But it was fun to do. When I was teaching, I have had an easier time motivating adiult students because all I have to do is to 'speak' to their conscience. Enjoy the rest of your fruitful day.

My partner is a big Father Brown fan, he watches it while washing the dishes! It's a shame so many people seem to go into 'panic mode' whenever they are faced with maths problems, because really it is like discovering a new way to see the world!
