Plans and consistency

Yesterday I saw a meme somewhere that went something like this- "All my life I have been a certain way. And yet, I suddenly expect myself to wake up tomorrow and follow plans and become disciplined." That hit me hard. I'm a serial planner. I always make plans, time tables. Wake up at this time, do this by then, do that tomorrow etc etc. But I'm never able to follow through. I always plan to exercise every morning. But I rarely am regular at it. Although I really love it, I'm never punctual. I do wake up early but I while away my time, and do not actually start the exercise. However, I have started doing it from yesterday. I really hope I don't stop this time, no matter what. How about you all? Any tips to be consistent at things?

They say you have to do something again and again for three months before it becomes a habit

What you have just explain is what is experiencing here. sometimes I blames myself that this is something despicable which I should have gotten rid off long time ago.

No no.. it's simple laziness! Like others have said in comments, if we are trying and trying again and external environment is supportive then we may succeed someday, hopefully...

@sammyy I feel like I am not lazy but what is killing me is procrastination.

I've found that I need to set a realistic goal I WANT to achieve, not just wish I could achieve, before things begin to come together. I used to be a body builder and worked out six days a week, an hour and a half per day. I felt like I looked great and I know I felt great. I enjoyed the attention I was given... *shrug* I wish I looked like that again, but there's no driving force behind the wish.

Driving force seems like good motivation to keep anything continued.

Well, I am very regular to exercising and I hardly miss it. It's actually a habit now and I don't feel good if I miss it. But about few other things, I need to be a bit more focused and consistent.

hello sammy. I also experienced the same thing as you. many plans but only end up doing nothing. lol. maybe we really need to add motivation in the form of goals that must be achieved. like, I need to get to my ideal weight soon so I can be confident at the year-end party. or to make your ex regret it. lol. I don't have any specific goals so I'm really lazy. haha. it's just my personal opinion.

I know right! There is no real motivation...whatever motivation starts for a few days ends up fading away after a while... We really need something that stays..

I've read tips about how to attain your goals which is a bit different I suppose. And I can't remember them all but they include writing them down, breaking them down into small parts and making sure they're realistic. Good luck with your efforts. Can you exercise with a friend so you have to be on time so as not to let your friend down?

It takes a while to form good habits or change bad ones. You have to stay consistent no matter what life throws at you, in order to establish the habit, then you will follow through without thinking about it. In order to do that, I make my goals clear and remind myself of them whenever I feel like skipping something: Why am I doing this? What will happen if I DON'T do it? Sometimes the consequences are grave. I've been through enough disease and pain to know, I cannot afford to skip on my workout and meal plans. The history keeps me going, but so as the future (longevity, prevention of further disease, be a good example to my kids etc). Bottom line let the bigger picture drive you, not how tired / lazy / hungry / sick you feel at any given moment. Another tip is promise yourself to do it for only 5 minutes if you're not feeling like doing it. We all have 5 minutes. And chances are, you will gain momentum and keep going after those 5 minutes end.
