A belated memorial service for a Chief Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu

Andrew Peacock was an Australian politician and diplomat. He died in America in April 2021 which would have been at the height of the pandemic. Now, there is to be a memorial service for him next week. But what I found intriguing is that he is a Chief Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu. What, you may well ask, does that mean? ‘Logohu’ is a Motuan term used by Papua New Guineans for the bird-of-paradise, which became the national symbol of Papua New Guinea when it gained its independence. Because of Peacock’s efforts in helping bringing this independence, he was awarded the honour. I find it a bit amusing that Peacock became associated with the bird-of-paradise. The strelitzia plant is often known as the ‘bird-of-paradise’ too but isn’t the real thing very lovely? The photo is courtesy: markaharper1, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0

The bird of paradise and peacock are both spectacular-looking birds. Can you imagine if he was inducted into the Order of the House Sparrow?

@JudyEv There's an American jazz bassist named Gary Peacock, but I don't believe there's any relation to my stepcousins.

I don't think it is a terribly common name but it might be.

I agree that it is amusing that Peacock became associated to the bird of paradise. It is a beautiful bird, but the peacock also is.

Most countries have a special animal or bird that they associate with their nation. It's always interesting to know about these.

He was what you might call a statesman. He was also awarded an honour by the Japanese for what he did to help them.

So if Jimmy Dickens had played in Australia he would have had to sing “May the Logohu Fly Up Your Nose”? It’s interesting that, with a name like Peacock, he wasn’t associated automatically with that bird. (Or are peacocks not native to, or found in, Paula New Guinea?) At any rate, it’s nice that Mr. Peacock wasn’t forgotten, even after nearly a year, and will receive a tribute.

I don't think peacocks are native to PNG but the association is still pretty funny.
