What Is Wrong With This Photo?

Many will quickly see the problem, it could be that some will never have even heard it. It's history goes back to the middle ages but was changed as threats changed over the course of time. I have always practiced this. Can you spot what is wrong in this photo? Do you think it's still relevant?

The man should stay to the outside to protect the lady, my husband always does.

@Vikingswest1 - In our days I fear many do not even know, they are too busy looking at their smartphones to take care of the one who is with them.

@LadyDuck That's a good point. I was at a playground with my grandson a year or two ago and the kids weren't using the playground equipment, they were all sitting on benches playing with their phones. I see people walking off curbs because their eyes are glued to their screens.

Yes. That's right. I do that with my wife too. I don't even know if people do that anymore. I fear many things are being lost.

That reminds me of a funny saying -" Why do husbands sleep on the right side of the bed?", and the funny response is that they have to be right even in their sleep Or the funnier response would be that they can be right only in their dream

I've heard it both ways. 1. The man is supposed to walk on the outside to guard the women from splashes from passing vehicles. 2. The man is supposed to walk on the inside to guard the woman from people emptying chamber pots out their windows.

@xander6464 I have my own rule too. I am blind in my right eye and deaf in my right ear. I always make sure my wife is on that side when she is talking to me so I don't have to see or hear her.

3. She is to stand on his left so he can protect her with his sword. It's likely something like this goes back even further.

I didn't even notice that. Good point It's about the man standing on her other side next to the curb to provide a barrier for dangers that could come from the street.

@sunrisefan I think you're right. It makes me sad too. It was a way to show respect to a woman. Not too many things being done these days like that.

I feel the same way. It appears that some people see this as belittling to women. Equality and all that.

I agree. I have had responses here that say this is outdated because women are equal and don't need protection. It may be a dying custom.

He looks down and does not look straight up, I wonder if he is happy. A gentleman should always walk on the outside of the sidewalk, perhaps he is not a gentleman, she is a couple of steps ahead of him so perhaps she is too aggressive to allow him the outside space.

@DianneN It's just such a strange time when the custom is meant to show the greatest respect and the younger generations see the act as disrespectful to women. Nothing even makes sense anymore.

@Vikingswest1 In some customs the woman has to walk a foot behind the man.l don't know if that practice still exists.
• United States
5 Feb 22
@Kandae11 I have heard that too but I follow this. You can't protect her if she is a foot behind you. I would rather walk as equal.

My brother used to say that the way a man treats a woman equal or beneath him sparks off the integrity of his character. Those words were really profound to me up till now. As for this picture, I wouldn't say it's right or wrong but it will be better if she had walked on the inner side rather than the outer closer to the road. However, if she feels comfortable with that placement, then kudos to her.

Not all people observe this custom any longer. I was taught it was an act of the highest respect. An... I value you so much, I'll put myself in the way of danger. Unless someone says differently, I will just do it out of habit. So far, no one has said anything but I guess it's a different world now.

@Vikingswest1 I used to think like that and they call it a hopelessly romantic fool, ha. I am terribly sorry.. I thought you are a lady all along. It's certainly refreshing to see a man still thinking and feeling that way. More power to you.

The man should be walking on the side closest to the road! Whether or not it's still relevant, I think it still falls into good manners. When I walk with my daughters I always try to walk on the traffic side, it's an automatic mom-thing for me. I want to keep my children safe (never mind that they are adults!).

Children, women or pets, the man should be the barrier from danger. The custom is slowly dying in today's society.

You are right. Many people see it as an insult to the woman these days. I was taught it was the highest form of respect a man could show for a woman. Go figure.

I actually think the woman is not wearing a belt. it is a beautiful dress model with a visible belly. CMIIW

I didn't even consider that. It's a very old custom still in practice in many places. The man should be walking closest to the street to serve as a barrier between the woman and any hazard that could come from road traffic. A protective role to show respect.
