The wreck of the Endeavour has been found off Rhode Island

James Cook (1728-1779) was a British explorer, navigator and captain, and the first to make European contact with the east coast of Australia. In his vessel, Endeavour, he sailed thousands of miles in three voyages in the Pacific Ocean. In 1770 he landed at Botany Bay, on Australia’s east coast, sailing north, and subsequently claiming the whole coastline as British territory. In 1779, during his third exploratory voyage, he was attacked and killed during a skirmish with some Hawaiian islanders. Now, maritime experts are convinced they have found the remains of his ship, Endeavour. The ship was scuttled in Newport Harbour, off Rhode Island, as part of the American War of Independence in 1778. Efforts are now focussed on how to protect and preserve it. It’s a shame that things are destroyed in the heat of the moment instead of their historical significance being recognised at the time. I’m thinking, for example, of the wonderful buildings and artworks destroyed in Bosnia and surrounds when that region was at war. The photo is of a replica of Cook’s ship, Endeavour, which has a very interesting history of its own. Another time perhaps.

I missed that tidbit of news. Thanks for sharing. I did a little bit of quick Googling and learned that the researchers who found it are Australian . I read a fictionalized journal account of at least one of those exploratory journeys with my children. I remember really enjoying the book but I can't for the life of me remember the title. Time to go comb through my bookshelves and see if I can spot it. Edit: found it in the first place I looked. Stowaway by Karen Hesse.

I remember how you used to write about reading with your children. I was always impressed by that.

@JudyEv That is one of the things I miss the most, sharing a good story with my children.

@SophiaMorros I'm sure they all love reading now although perhaps they don't have much time for it.

Interesting. Why did the ship disappear?

@TheHorse Yes. Several ships were sunk at the time it seems but they now think they've identified it.

Basically, it was to prevent a French fleet from entering the bay. The English sunk several vessels there.

I saw or heard something about that in the news but I paid scant attention. Thanks for explaining it in depth. That Captain Cook got around didn't he??

He did indeed. I can't really imagine being at sea for days and days. You'd need to know what you were doing.

It’s made the news here a while ago. Not too far from where I live. I read it’s history on Wiki.

Apparently there is very little left of it but hopefully they can preserve what little there is.

At the time it was just another working vessel, it is only later that their importance is realised. Mind you, these days we seem to be better at recognising important moments

Yes, I guess so. Just another vessel and not necessarily important.
