Still Spinning Plates

Those of you who have known me for a while might remember that I used to use the moniker Platespinner. Back when my children were young and I was trying to home school them and keep up with all my other obligations I saw a video of an old variety show with a performer spinning plates. It was the perfect metaphor for my life at the time. A few years ago as my youngest child finished school and other things in my life started to shift I felt that Platespinner no longer really fit. I stopped spinning plates, and I got bored. Covid set in and I got even more bored as most of my outside activities came to a screeching halt. Now life is picking up the pace again. I no longer have children to teach, but I have a job that keeps me busy part-time and with a couple of weddings coming up for friends I have set myself the monumental task of finishing two quilts between now and the end of April. I’m trying to build a small business and I still have a couple of volunteer positions that keep me very busy from time to time. And just because I thought it would be a good idea to add one more iron to the fire, I challenged myself to post on myLot every day for 21 days (today is #17). Those plates are spinning again. Some days I feel a little bit like I am struggling to keep up, but overall I feel more alive and content than I have in a while. It doesn’t matter what name I use Platespinner is just who I am! The photo is totally unrelated to the past. It shows one of my favourite sewing projects. My husband took a photo of the lighthouse in Bass Harbor Maine, my daughter took the photo and made a "colouring-book" sketch for me, and I turned it into a wallhanging.

That is a beautiful quilt. Hope all your irons in the fire work out.

I remember Platespinner very well. The wall hanging is beautiful. If your small business is making and selling such artistic creations, I see a bright future for you.

@SophiaMorros I predict that if you can do some wall hangings of the NC Outer Banks lighthouses similar to the one pictured above, they will bring in customers.

Sometimes you just need to be kept busy. No harm in that. At least not in my opinion.

@SophiaMorros I can understand that completely. I've started to add healthy habits into my lifestyle. (Or, am trying to) and I know I get a little restless if I can't fit them in. And, yes, we all need a little downtime in our lives, too. It's just in how you balance it all.

I don't mind a bit of downtime, but too much of anything drives me batty.

Thank you! We might have interacted once or twice when I was posting under the name of Platespinner since I do recall the name DaddyEvil, but it wasn't much so I won't be hurt that you don't remember me.

Beautiful quilt. And I hope being on myLot is a plate you can spin with everything else for a long time, ‘cause I missed you! (And Emmett.)

@sophiamorros I strongly suspect that you’d go insane if you didn’t have enough plates to spin.

You are probably correct. I am feeling much more at peace with myself and the world around me now that I have a variety of things going on to keep my life structured.

I just love your wallhanging. You really are such a talented seamstress. I think you're right. You're a Platespinner so no point fighting it too much. But I do hope you won't just suddenly stop posting when you get to 21 discussions.

Have you really tried actual platespinning?

No, I am more of a metaphorical platespinner. I don't want to break my dishes.
