My Girly Student Cried: Why?!?

To cut the chase, she cried because I scolded her for not studying her lesson. I am fine with this reason. But then, I got pissed off when she was asking every word of every paragraph of her lesson last night. I cannot let this pass so she heard the ugly truth of her performance. She cried the whole class with the sobbing episodes. After the class, she canceled all her classes the whole week. Should I feel bad about this course of action? A big NO because I do not want to see her again. Can you have all the patience for a lazy student like her? Image Credit: i.pinimg.com

If you were a teacher of a class with, say, 30 pupils or more, you could not behave like this. I was a teacher at secondary grammar schools for forty years. If I had felt insulted because a pupil was lazy and not interested in the subject I taught, I'd be insulted all the time. I always told young teachers never to take things personally, to keep a distance. I made it clear to my pupils that my job was to teach them and that I was paid for this no matter if they wanted to learn something or not. Of course, it was more enjoyable for both sides if they responded to my teaching but I would certainly not cry in my pillow if they didn't. I think you made your pupil quite happy when you showed that her behaviour had got to you even though she cried about your reaction. Keep your cool!

I am glad that it is not a group class online. I refused to be in this situation. If ever I am, I prefer to be teaching university students or graduate students. I have the same reason that I am not here to entertain their laziness. With this particular student, she wants to swallow me as a whole. I do not care if she wants to listen or learn during the class, but the attitude of controlling me is not acceptable for me.

Keeping cool is extremely important for a teacher.

She has only to blame herself, this is a lesson you gave her for free.

The bad thing is that she is measuring me up. I find it so rude and she did not show respect. That's the reason why she got some words that even dogs cannot swallow.

@LadyDuck I agree. I can still remember my teachers before. They are stricter than now.

@Shavkat - I remember that our teachers had a way not to be rude, but to be firm. Because also scolding must be an art, a way to teach and not to be simply rude or insulting.

Good luck if she did not to her other teachers online.

I have so many of them in college but I don't insult. We need to be resilient and compassionate. I message a lazy student privately. In the case of that young child who cried desperately, it will be better if you didn't say about the ugly truth of her performance. You'll surely be reported.

Our students are far better than them. I can be that person you mentioned. The culture thing is totally different. If I am not going to call her attention to this concern, she will definitely swallow you alive.

Hopefully she will learn a lesson from this even if she doesn't come back.

I am sure she will. She received words that can make her be a better person even she's not going to book my classes.

Sorry to hear. You did the right thing. You have lot of patience dealing with kids, if you find it not to let it pass, it's right. Don't feel stressed or guilty. Take care

I am cool when scolded her last night. In my book, she needs to study before the class. It is not all be carried out by her virtual teachers.

Yes, I am working on Course Hero as a part-timer, I am referring to my online student through video calling. I am her number one villain and it cannot be denied.
